Roger Federer: Why He Must Win Another Grand Slam for His Legacy
Roger Federer has not won a Grand Slam since the Australian Open in 2010.
The seven majors that have happened since then have been split between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, consequently both now ranked higher than he is.
People are now talking more about them when it comes to the latest Grand Slam.
Roger needs another major title, and here are seven reasons why.
1. He Has Not Won One for a Long Time
1 of 7Seven straight majors have passed by with Roger Federer not winning one of them. He has only appeared as a finalist in one.
He needs to win another title soon, because other players are becoming better, the game is evolving and he is getting left behind.
Another title would show that he is not irrelevant.
2. People Have Short-Term Memories
2 of 7There’s a new generation of tennis players as well as tennis fans, and Federer’s glory days are becoming a distant memory.
Federer needs to win a major in order to show people that his style has not gone the way of serve-and-volley tennis, and to show the new generation of players how the game should be played.
3. 16 Grand Slam Titles Will Not Be a Record Forever
3 of 7When Pete Sampras won his fourteenth title, few thought the record would be broken, and none thought it would be so soon.
While Federer now sits with 16 titles, that record certainly is not insurmountable. Adding more titles to his tally would make his record all the more secure and less finite.
4. He Wants to Match Sampras's Record at Wimbledon
4 of 7Another Wimbledon title would mean matching Sampras’s seven wins there. This would be huge for Federer, having already toppled his grand slam total but still behind in weeks as world No. 1.
Wimbledon used to be Federer’s territory where nobody could touch him, and another win there would inspire fear among the increasing number of power players who blast through the draw.
5. Rafael Nadal Is Not Far Behind
5 of 7Sure, 10 major titles is still distant from 16, and Djokovic is beating Nadal at every final in which they play.
This isn’t to say that it it’s impossible for Nadal to catch up to Federer. He could win six more French Open titles, and their head-to-head record alone would be enough for Rafa fans to declare him the GOAT.
6. He Still Needs to Show That He's a Contender
6 of 7Everyone has heard: Federer is not a favorite in any of the grand slams he plays in anymore.
Roger needs to win a grand slam to silence the ever-growing number of critics and people who think he should retire, just as he silenced critics in 2009, winning both Wimbledon and the French Open after a poor 2008.
7. His Career Should End on a Good Note
7 of 7Sampras struggled at the end of his career, but concluded it with his last US Open title.
We don’t want to see Roger struggle and end his legacy without another major win. Roger needs to win another title in order for his fans to see him retire as he was during his prime: a champion.
