Michael Vick Injury: Vick's Latest Ailment Not Caused by Refs' Treatment

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick was critical of the officials in Sunday night's game when he broke his right hand after an apparent late hit by New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty in the third quarter.

The injury sidelined Vick and is likely to sideline him for a few weeks.

After the game, Vick said, via Pro Football Talk:

I just think more precaution should be taken when I’m inside the pocket. Look at all the replays—I’m on the ground every time. It’s unfortunate for myself, it’s unfortunate for my team and I’d be lying if I sat here and said I wasn’t frustrated right now.

"

It's no secret that Vick has been hit an awful lot since his comeback in 2009. He's also endured a lot of late hits. Sometimes he gets the call, sometimes he doesn't.

But what Vick has to also realize is that this is the game of football and there are borderline plays that won't be called in his favor. When a defensive lineman is coming at him full steam ahead and he lets the ball go a split second before the defender is in his grill, there's a good chance it will be too late.

It's simply the reality of football. Even on quarterback slides, when you're running straight at a defender and he's running straight at you, it's pretty difficult for the defender to hold up if you all of a sudden go into a slide.

That's why Vick may feel like he's getting a bad rap from officials, when in reality quarterbacks are going to take late hits all the time, and Vick isn't the only one who doesn't get the call. There isn't some mass conspiracy organized by the officials to never call a late hit on Vick.

Vick of all people should understand this. His very style of play lends for more hits. On top of that, he has a patched-up offensive line that doesn't exactly give him a lot of time to throw the ball. He's always going to take late hits and, yes, sometimes a call is missed.

I can understand Vick being frustrated, who wouldn't be after breaking their hand?

But he also has to understand that his style of play and the dangers of playing the game of football will always lend for late hits.

Vick said on Sunday that "obviously something catastrophic was going to happen" after all the late hits he had sustained the last two years.

But that can be said about any quarterback in the NFL, not just him.
