Kansas City Chiefs Report Card: Handing Out Grades to Every Week 3 Starter
The Chiefs are 0-3. These grades are not pretty. After reading this slideshow, I'm sure every Chiefs fan can look at this and understand why changes must be made.
Fans will understand why there is a "Suck 4 (Andrew) Luck" campaign out there. This football team is not good and these grades show for it.
Let me know what you guys agree and disagree on!
QB Matt Cassel: F
1 of 19In 2009, Scott Pioli signed Matt Cassel to a six-year deal worth $63 million.
This Sunday, Cassel had his moment to shine and help the Chiefs tie the game as they were in San Diego territory with the two-minute offense.
However, Cassel threw an interception straight to a safety who was being blocked on a screen pass.
$63 million quarterbacks are not supposed to do that. Cassel has thrown for three touchdowns, five interceptions and has earned a quarterback rating of 65.5.
RB Thomas Jones: D
2 of 19Thomas Jones has a 2.8 yard per carry average this season after rushing for 74 yards off of 28 carries.
As Jones continues to age, he seems to get the call to get the ball more from the coaching staff.
I think it is safe to say the Chiefs miss Jamaal Charles.
FB LeRon McClain: Incomplete
3 of 19It is hard to put my finger on Le'Ron McClain because he hasn't received a lot of face time. He only played four snaps with the Chiefs on opening week and has not had his name mentioned a lot by the play-by-play announcers. You would think by now he would have been the biggest newcomer.
WR Dwayne Bowe: B
4 of 19Dwayne Bowe has been the team's most reliable player so far this season, even with a couple of dropped passes.
Without Tony Moeaki and Jonathan Baldwin, Bowe is back to square one as the lone pass-catcher on the team. He has 11 receptions for 185 yards and a touchdown. He is the one player you would hate to see be next in line to receive a torn ACL.
WR Steve Breaston: C-
5 of 19Steve Breaston was very quiet for the Chiefs until this week against the Chargers.
Breaston had three catches this Sunday, which equated his total for the first three games. Breaston caught a 43-yard pass that placed the Chiefs at the 1-yard line, which allowed them to score on the following play.
TE Anthony Becht: Incomplete
6 of 19Statistically, Anthony Becht has done nothing and is listed as a starter on the depth chart.
The only significant thing worth mentioning about Becht is that he is wearing 88, which is what Tony Gonzalez wore in Kansas City for 12 seasons.
Offensive Line: F
7 of 19From left to right, the offensive line consists of Branden Albert, Ryan Lilja, Casey Wiegmann, Jon Asamoah and Barry Richardson.
So far, these guys are not showing that they were as good as last season. It seems like the release of Brian Waters has hurt this team significantly.
DE Glenn Dorsey: D
8 of 19Every now and then, Glenn Dorsey will have a big game. This past Sunday was his best game of the season as he helped the Chiefs stop the run in the fourth quarter and put Philip Rivers under pressure.
But it may be true that Dorsey does not belong in a 3-4 defensive scheme.
DE Tyson Jackson: F
9 of 19Tyson Jackson was the first player selected by the new regime in Kansas City with the third overall pick in the 2009 draft. So far, Jackson has been a bust and has not done anything to prove that he is worthy of being an NFL starter.
NT Kelly Gregg: F
10 of 19Another name that announcers have not called much is Kelly Gregg. Gregg came to Kansas City to replace Ron Edwards. The replacement was in hopes that the Chiefs would solve their nose tackle issue, but it has not worked.
OLB Tamba Hali: A
11 of 19Tamba Hali continues to be the key pass-rusher for the team. Hali was the key reason the Chiefs remained competitive against the San Diego Chargers in Sunday's 20-17 loss.
If Hali keeps up his level of play, he may be able to help the Chiefs earn a couple of wins this season.
OLB Justin Houston: C
12 of 19Justin Houston is slowly proving that he should have been drafted sooner and has made progress at the outside linebacker position opposite of Hali.
Houston has been a good pass-rusher and has also covered a few receivers this season.
Keep a close eye on Houston as his rookie season unfolds.
ILB Derrick Johnson: C-
13 of 19After leading the team in tackles last season, Derrick Johnson has taken a step back as he tries to help this defense regroup. With the loss of Eric Berry, the Chiefs have few key players on defense, Johnson being one of them.
Johnson also dropped a key interception thrown by Rivers this past Sunday that could have helped the Chiefs take the lead for the first time this season.
ILB Jovan Belcher: F
14 of 19Among most NFL teams, Jovan Belcher would not be a starter. While he is a big linebacker, he struggles to wrap up runners and make tackles.
Belcher would be more suited as a backup, which was his expected role until Brandon Siler was placed on the injured reserve.
CB Brandon Flowers: C
15 of 19Brandon Flowers has been inconsistent this season. He has struggled to show that he can become a shutdown corner in the league after being responsible for five touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season.
Flowers has also shined and has come away with two interceptions in three games. He is learning that injuries can take place in the league. With Eric Berry out, Flowers has been on his own against receivers.
CB Brandon Carr: Incomplete
16 of 19This is Brandon Carr's fourth season in the league, but thus far he has been a non-factor. As opposed to Flowers, Carr has not been picked on a whole lot this season by quarterbacks.
S Jon McGraw: D
17 of 19Jon McGraw isn't the most viable starting safety in the league and serves better as a backup. McGraw was leading the team in tackles going into Week 3 and is second on the team after Week 3's game.
However, McGraw has been mostly helpful against the run and has had a hard time keeping up with receivers in the passing game.
He also fumbled an interception against the Detroit Lions on the first drive of the game.
S Kendrick Lewis: C
18 of 19Prior to this game, Lewis would have received a D, but he was on his toes this past Sunday and played a role in helping the Chiefs remain competitive in this game.
Lewis picked off Rivers on the opening drive for the Chargers and gave the Chiefs a chance to make a field goal, which was eventually missed.
K Ryan Succop: F
19 of 19I'll stay away from other special teams talk, but I could not forget about this one.
I received some negative feedback for saying that this might be Ryan Succop's last season in Kansas City.
Succop has missed kicks from 49, 44 and 38-yards out this season. He is 2-for-5 on the year and may not be retained when his contract is up after this season.
