Detroit Lions: Don't Look Now, but Lions Advance to 3-0 with Win vs. Vikings

Tom EdringtonSep 25, 2011

The Minnesota Vikings were ahead of the Detroit Lions 20-0 Sunday.

At halftime.

The Lions had them exactly where they wanted them.

After all, these were the same Vikings who led the Buccaneers, 17-0 at the half, at home, last week.

Can you say epic comeback?

This was a huge comeback, Ndamukong Suh huge, which means it's pretty big by anyone's standards.

Simple fact is the Lions did to these Vikings what the Buccaneers did to them last week, ripping the hearts out of the Minnesota faithful who watched that purple and gold crumbling in stunned silence in the Mall of America Field, which should change it's name to Maul of America Field.

Can you say Groundhog Day in Minnesota?

Last week it was Josh Freeman. Sunday it was Matthew Stafford and his young gang of upstarts, who came back to win 26-23 in overtime.

It was a comeback big enough for the automotive industry to hang its hard-hats on.

Don't look now, but when Jason Hanson booted that 32-yarder in overtime to make his Lions 3-and-Oh My, it was Deja Booooooo all over again for the Minnesota faithful.

Two-and-Oh really isn't a big deal.

But Three-and-Oh My, well, you have to go back to 1980 when the Lions not only started 3-0, they started 4-0 under Monte Clarke, but as fate or lack of good play in the second half of the season would have it, those Lions ended up 9-7 and missed the playoffs.

These Lions are a lot better than that.

As exciting as the Lions' 2-0 start was, this would have been a downer. This was one of those "should win" games that can prove so very dangerous. There are too many "should wins" in the NFL that turn into losses.

That's the way this one was heading for the Lions until the Vikings got a solid dose of Stafford and Megatron and Suh and the rest of the determined Lions.

This was Stafford for 378, Megatron for 108 on seven catches.

Oh my.

If you weren't convinced when the Lions were 2-0, well, this is a whole different ball of wax. Twenty-point comebacks are things of legend and put a capital "C" in Confidence.

These Three-and-Oh My Lions now have their traveling bags stuffed with confidence.

And that should serve them well the next three months.
