Tom Brady: Did Red-Hot Start Make Him Too Overconfident?

Matt KingSep 25, 2011

Tom Brady's first two games of this season were unheard of. He had 940 yards passing to go with seven touchdowns. Doing some quick math, that meant he was on pace for about eleventy-jillion passing yards and 56 touchdowns. I think those would be records, but I'll have to check.

So naturally, hyperbole was high coming into today's game against the Bills. Brady did manage to throw for a still respectable 387 yards and four touchdowns, but he also managed to throw a crippling four interceptions on the way to a Patriots loss.

For those of you keeping track at home, four interceptions is exactly the same amount that Brady threw all of last year combined. So what on earth led to such a massive outpouring of turnovers from the man we all expected to be the MVP front-runner?

One theory floating around from a few people I've talked to is overconfidence. When you start a season the way Brady did, it's easy to start thinking that you are too good. Don't get me wrong, Brady is good, but it's entirely possible that he got a little too big for his britches.

You're telling me that after throwing for nearly 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in two games, then going home to your supermodel wife, you wouldn't sort of feel invincible? I probably would. When you're in a groove like that, you start taking chances you normally wouldn't.

Have you ever been hitting everything in pickup basketball and thrown up a couple of ridiculous shots as kind of a "heat check?" I know I have. Maybe this game was Brady's own heat check game. He still accomplished plenty, but his mistakes ended up costing the Pats the game.

I'd look for Brady to probably pull things back a little bit trying to limit his mistakes. He'll still put up great numbers, but probably not at the pace he has been on.

Either way, it's a moot point if New England's defense can't stop anybody. But four interceptions isn't going to help anything.
