Tom Brady: Why Patriots QB Is Human After All

Tom EdringtonJun 7, 2018

This one started for the Patriots and Bills as if the story of Human Bondage would continue. After all, the Patriots have held the Bills in Football Bondage, so to speak, winning the last 15 straight meetings with the Boys from Buffalo.

It was vintage Brady early Sunday afternoon in Orchard Park. He rolled up 222 yards at halftime, threw three touchdown passes and was generally having his way with the Bills defense.

With a quarterback rating of better than 125, Brady was looking his typical super-human self.

Ah, but Mr. Murphy was making his football rounds yesterday and he'd eventually stop in on the Patriots, just when another victory over the Bills looked like an easy proposition.

Somewhere along the way to a third straight win, Murphy's Law kicked in and a Buffalo comeback came along with it.

The super-human Tom Brady of the first half became the all-too-human Tom Brady over the final 30 minutes with three interceptions, one of those a pick-six by the Bills Drayton Florin, who scampered 27 yards for a Buffalo touchdown that put his guys up 31-24.

Brady had one more drive left in him and he tied the game late in the fourth with a second TD pass to Wes Welker. And while Brady looked human, Welker didn't as he caught 16 for 216 yards.

Part of the humanizing of Brady came from the performance of his Buffalo counterpart, a Harvard man, the cerebral Ryan Fitzpatrick, who in the end, out-threw Brady with 369 yards to Brady's 386.

Somewhere along the way to 3-0, Murphy sat next to Brady on the Pats bench and he'd end up with four interceptions on the day. It's tough for even Tom Terrific to overcome stuff like that.

Four interceptions will condemn even the best to a losing afternoon in the National Football League, and the human Brady saw it first-hand.

Yes, Superman stood on the Patriots sideline with time running down and Rian Lindell lining up a 28-yard field goal for the Bills. He hit it, too.

Superman, meet Krytonite.

The Bills freed themselves from Patriot bondage.

And in the process, proved that Tom Brady really is human and that these 3-0 Bills have a superhuman look of their own.
