Solheim Cup: Caroline Hedwall Comes Up Big for Europe Months After Turning Pro

Kyle VassaloSep 25, 2011

Just months after turning pro, Caroline Hedwall came up huge by winning the half point that sealed the deal for Europe in the Solheim Cup.

Europe took down the United States in a close 15-13 battle. Europe hasn't won the Solheim Cup since 2003 and ironically, it was a player fresh out of the amateur ranks who came through when it mattered most.

This is a huge step for Hedwall, who couldn't have asked for a better start to her career. A victory over the United States is one of the highlights of not just Hedwall's career, but the entire European side.

It didn't look like Hedwall was going to be able to pull through. Ryann O'toole was leading the way, but she delivered when the chips were down.

It's that sort of performance that lets us know that she is going to be a force not only in the Solheim Cup, but in women's golf in general. This was a clutch performance from a promising young talent.

Alison Nicholas called it, "the finest moment of her career."

She wasn't alone. For the entire European side and the onlookers breaking the streak of victories by the American side is monumental.

The United States have had their way with the European side and a win at the hands of a young player like Hedwall has to give them hope for the future.

There is no doubt that the Europeans are enjoying their fourth win in this series and Hedwall couldn't have dreamed up a more spectacular start to her professional career.
