LSU Football: Matchup with Alabama Will Determine BCS Championship
The LSU Tigers are the best team in college football, and now there is absolutely no way to dispute it.
They were ranked No. 2 behind Oklahoma coming into this weekend’s matchup at West Virginia. The game proved to be yet another tough challenge for the Tigers, but it was yet another challenge that they lived up to.
LSU absolutely dismantled the Mountaineers in Morgantown 47-21.
Defensively they had some struggles against WVU quarterback Geno Smith, but the offense and quarterback Jarrett Lee finally got going, and that may prove to be what won them the No. 1 ranking in college football.
Lee completed 16-of-28 for 180 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions. It was another great game for Lee, who is widely considered to be a game-manager. He showed that he can not only run the offense, but he can score as well.
With the emergence of the offense there is no doubt in my mind that LSU is the best team in the nation, and their newly acquired No. 1 ranking goes a long ways in proving my point.
Surprisingly enough though, head coach Les Miles doesn’t think the Tigers are there just yet, according to the Associated Press via ESPN:
""I like the position we're in, but I don't think we're the best team in college football today," Miles said. "I think there is a hope and want and desire to be there. I don't know if we're good enough right now to do everything we want to do. That's putting the cart before the horse."
The Tigers (4-0) converted two of the four turnovers they created into scores, built a big early lead and withstood West Virginia's strong comeback for its third win over a ranked opponent this season, with all of three coming away from home. Every win so far has been by double digits.
"
Miles is right, the Tigers woke up this morning to a No.1 ranking, but they still have a ways to go to hold onto it.
In the SEC there is never an easy game, and LSU still has a very hard schedule ahead of them.
No game looms bigger than their Nov. 5th matchup at Alabama.
The Tide are currently ranked No. 3, but are boasting arguably the best running back in the nation in Trent Richardson, and a defense packed with future NFL talent.
This game looks like it will essentially determine the SEC champion, and in the end it should determine who we see in the BCS championship.
LSU deserves to be No. 1 and they should enjoy their ranking for now.
They need to take it one game at a time and not get ahead of themselves, but there can be no doubting that the matchup with Alabama will be the determining factor of their season.
