Knowshon Moreno Injury: Is Willis McGahee the Better Fantasy Starter?

Andrea HangstSep 25, 2011

Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno is in fact playing in today's game against the Tennessee Titans, but it doesn't mean he will be the leading rusher for the team.

Moreno, who missed last week's game against the Cincinnati Bengals and most of practice this week with a hamstring injury, was disappointing in his Week 1 outing against the Oakland Raiders. Moreno rushed just eight times for 22 yards and had two receptions for 35 yards.

In contrast, so-called "backup" Willis McGahee has 32 rushes for 104 yards, including a touchdown and six receptions for 37 yards, though he has played in both games.

However, neither are viable fantasy starters. While McGahee has the better stats, he's averaging just 3.3 yards per carry to Moreno's 2.8; those kinds of numbers can only help your fantasy team in an extremely deep league.

Most of McGahee's value lies in his receiving stats. In a PPR league, McGahee makes a case for a situational start based on the matchup.

Overall, the Broncos are struggling on all levels of the game, which makes starting any Denver player a major risk. They can't get much going on the ground and their passing game remains just as suspect.

If you have depth at running back, I'd suggest not starting either Moreno or McGahee. Move Moreno if you can, and if not, try to find something of worth on the waiver wire.

McGahee might be useful on your bench should the Broncos improve their run game, but until then I'd recommend you not start him.
