Solheim Cup 2011 Results: Sizzling US Comeback Will Lead to Cup Glory

Richard LangfordSep 25, 2011

The 2011 Solheim Cup is over. Well, not officially. They still have one full day of play left...officially, but for practical purposes this competition was ended at the end of Saturday's action.

The US was trailing by three points with three matches to go on Saturday. They trailed 8-5. Things were not looking good. The Europeans need to get to 14.5 points to clinch the Solheim Cup.

There are 16 points available on Sunday. Had Europe won the last three Saturday matches they would have only needed to win 3.5 of the possible 16 points. Had the US and Europe tied the last three matches on Saturday, Europe would have only needed to win 6.5 of the possible 16 Sunday points.

The US needed to make a run to not have this match head into Sunday needing a miracle. They made a run. The US won all three of those last matches to tie things up eight.

This sudden and drastic change of fortunes did much more than tie the match. It is going to lead to another Solheim Cup for the US.

The US has all the momentum and history of success. They also have a half-point lead. Since they are the defending champs, a tie means the US wins. That leaves Europe facing the prospects of having to outperform the US on the final day to claim the Cup.

Not only does Europe now have to face the demon of a notion that they let a commanding lead slip away in moments, but they have to look back on the fact that they have struggled mightily in Sunday singles Solheim Cup play.

All-time Solheim points leader Laura Davies is trying not to think about it, but not succeeding. Davies, as quoted on CBSSports.com:

"We've messed up the singles so many times. This time we need to go out there and not worry."

The Europeans are rattled. To this, I have no doubt. The Americans should be worried, too. They are going to have to figure out where to put their new trophy.

Golf is a very mental sport. It requires confidence, flow and momentum. All of those intangible golf clubs are in the bags of the Americans, and it is going to lead them to victory.
