Randy Moss: Open to Returning to NFL, Which Teams Are a Fit?

Nicholas GossSep 25, 2011

Randy Moss is one of the best wide receivers in the history of the NFL, whose career will one day be told at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but before that happens, Moss could return to football to capture the one thing that has eluded him during his career, a Super Bowl championship.

ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted Sunday morning that Moss could be open to a return to football.

"Randy Moss open to returning to winning team, with seasoned QB, proper comp. Pats, Eagles, NYJ, NYG, Cowboys, Bears could interest him."

Back in August Moss, prepared to retire from football after 13 seasons, in which he caught 945 passes for 14,858 yards and 153 touchdowns, including a record-setting 2007 season when he caught 23 touchdowns passes from New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, which is the most ever for a receiver in a single season.

If Moss is serious about coming back, there are only a few teams that can offer him what he really needs: a quality quarterback and a shot at a Super Bowl.

The Patriots are an obvious choice, given Moss' productive history with Tom Brady, and the Patriots quarterback wouldn't be opposed to having his former No. 1 receiver back in New England.

In a Boston.com story earlier this month, Brady was open to Moss returning to the Pats.

“I can’t get into his brain at all but I love the guy. He's a friend of mine. If he ever did have the opportunity to come back, I'd certainly welcome him with open arms.”

Brady and Moss were an amazing combo in 2007 when both set single-season records for passing and receiving touchdowns respectively, but is the Patriots offense as it's currently constructed a good fit for Moss?

One of the reasons Moss was traded to the Minnesota Vikings from Patriots last season was because their offense was too one-dimnesional with Moss, and opposing defenses could shut down the Patriots if they took away Moss.

Now the Patriots offense is much more balanced with the solid running of BenJarvus Green-Ellis and tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez creating matchup nightmares for defensive coordinators.

If the Patriots don't want Moss, who is the best fit? The Chicago Bears are an interesting choice because they lack a true star receiver. Devin Hester is a good player, but he doesn't scare defenses with his deep-play ability and isn't a red-zone threat.

Jay Cutler and Randy Moss could be a fantastic combo, and along with running back Matt Forte who is off to a great start this season, Chicago would have a balanced offense.

The Philadelphia Eagles don't need a deep-threat receiver when they have DeSean Jackson, and receiver Jeremy Maclin could very well be a superstar receiver in Philly soon.

The New York Jets have plenty of receiving options, and with their summer signing of Plaxico Burress, they don't need a big, tall wideout.

Dallas isn't a real Super Bowl contender, especially with Tony Romo's injury issues over the last year. The New York Giants also aren't headed to the Super Bowl and might not even make the playoffs.

Randy Moss' best chance at a Super Bowl ring is signing with the Patriots. His best chance at getting the most balls thrown to him and being on a contender at the same time is joining the Chicago Bears.

Few people believed Moss would truly retire in August when it was clear he could still help a contender.

Now that it seems he's open to returning to football, many teams will surely consider signing him, because Randy Moss can win games with his talent, even at the age of 34.
