Tim Tebow: Why He Gives the Denver Broncos the Best Chance to Win

David LevinSep 29, 2011

After the loss to Tennessee where the Titans lost their best weapon on offense and the Broncos came up short again, Denver head coach John Fox at some point this season will have to make a decision that will shake the foundation of the franchise and the NFL.

He will have to decide when he is going to insert Tim Tebow in his lineup.

While Tebow is the former first round draft pick out of Florida and the uber-celebrity that makes fans offer to take out billboards in his honor and has the who world resting on his ear, it is his play that should be evaluated and not his personality or popularity.

Or should it? I guess that is why we have television and radio programs decide if those issues should be part of deciding whether a man those is third on the depth chart should come into a game when there are two other quarterbacks who are clearly ahead of him.

Tebow is as talented an athlete to come out of football in some time and while he does not possess a John Elway-like arm or a Cam Newton-like body, he does things on a football field and in athletes that cannot be denied and maybe at some point this season he will show what he can really do. Three games of dress rehearsal last year were not enough to show what this man can do.

But maybe he gives the Broncos the best chance to win for other reasons than an average arm and a hitch in his throwing motion.

Football is not just about hitting the crossing pattern on third down or running through a tackle at the goal line. It is about intangibles as well, which are things Tebow has. He makes his teammates better.

He is an athlete playing quarterback and the Broncos are at or near the bottom of the NFL in terms of their record, they have one of the more electric players on their sideline right now, willing to start at receiver if need be to help his team win.

Tebow should be out there because of his intensity, his love for the game and his desire...err wait, that is a college speech someone gave a long time ago. But it fits the mold we are talking about. In a game where we see average passers (Chad Henne, Curtis Painter, Tarvaris Jackson) who cannot make a play, Tebow puts more effort into his participation and that can be contagious.

Losing is a symptom at times. And at times, losing breeds losing. Tebow hadn't lost at anything really since grade school until last season. But he seemed immune to it. He still had the same infectious (and downright annoying) presence, but that is just what the Broncos need.

I make no apologies for someone who loves his football and I make no apologies for someone who is good for the game. He also has this thing called an contract that makes him a very wealthy man and if we go down that road, then he is an extremely expensive backup.

Fans in Denver want to see him play. They are some of the most loyal fans in the league and they want what they pay for. When Tebow was drafted, it was the second coming of Elway and Orange Crush and Tom Jackson and Haven Moses (I dipped way back for that one).

Tebow is a winner and while it sounds like a college speech, maybe it should be. A winner on and off the field gives this team the best chances for change. Kyle Orton can put up tons of numbers and pad stats, but if he cannot get the team in the victory column, does it matter if he is the best at the position?

The one thing about being a quarterback is that you need to win. Orton isn't doing that. Brady Quinn did not do that in Cleveland. Tebow hasn't had the chance to do that yet in Denver, but he did do that in high school with a national champion and two national titles in college.

It stands to reason that while the Broncos season may already be over, why not allow the kid to play and just see what he can do.

Right now, it cannot hurt any worse than it already does. And, reasonably, it just may shock us all and cure so of what sickens the Broncos faithful and its team right now.
