UFC 135 Results: Why UFC Fans Should Be Thrilled About Jon Jones
Jon Jones is the real deal; both in the Octagon and outside it.
And that is why mixed martial arts fans should be thrilled about Jones potentially being the next face of the UFC.
For a 24-year-old who is so poised and so dangerous, there's been a lot of controversy surrounding the young up-and-comer.
Inside the Octagon, he hadn't fought "anybody of significance" until he submitted Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in the fourth round of Saturday night's UFC 135 main event. Outside the cage, in an enterprise that values being real and blunt, the youngest UFC champion in history came across as too scripted.
But all the negativity surrounding Jones is beginning to vanish, simply because fans are starting to realize Jones is destined to be the next great fighter in the UFC. And in regards to his personality, Jones did the same thing he's been doing all along—quietly destroying his opponents and being a class act in the process.
Rashad Evans, his next opponent, has given him zero respect, as Jackson did before admitting Jones was the real deal after his defeat. Now, I understand the veterans aren't in the habit of just throwing around praise, but surely after this victory they should show more class and give Jones the respect he deserves.
All this time people have been put off by the fact that Jones has appeared different than the other stalwarts of the UFC, discounting his modesty and humble nature as a fake act. When are we all going to realize that this is simply who he is?
He's a great model for the UFC, an organization that has blossomed thanks to its fighters' personalities, without going overboard during pre-fight promotion (ike its ancestor on the decline, boxing, has notoriously done).
In Jones, you have a fighter with the drive and dedication to his craft befitting a UFC icon. And, whether fans like it or not, his personality adds more grace to the sport, only making the UFC better.
But go ahead and continue to doubt Jones. He'll prove you wrong just like he proved Rampage Jackson wrong Saturday night.
