Oklahoma State vs. Texas A&M: Will Cowboys' Offense Find Spark vs. Aggies?
No. 8 Texas A&M is currently taking No. 7 Oklahoma State behind the woodshed at Kyle Field.
The Aggies lead 20-3 at halftime and have scored 13 unanswered points.
Both teams entered this game with Big 12 title hopes as well as National Championship hopes.
Through the first half, the better team has clearly been the Aggies. Kyle Field is one of the toughest places to play in the NCAA, and A&M is taking full advantage of the home field and their "12th Man."
What’s Gone Wrong?
The Cowboys have committed too many big penalties and are getting handily defeated in the field position battle.
Even a team with a good offense like Oklahoma State is going to be hampered when they consistently have to drive the length of the field.
Neither team has committed a turnover, which is good. Statistically, Oklahoma State has been solid. They are just digging too many holes.
What’s at Stake?
The winner will have a nice edge in the Big 12 race. Oklahoma will certainly have something to say about that, but the winning team here will knock one of their biggest opponents out of the way.
Also, as both teams are in the top 10, a National Championship run isn't too far-fetched. The loser will certainly have a hard time competing in both races.
Upset Potential: 9/10
This is an upset in the rankings, but not in Vegas. Texas A&M actually entered the game heavily favored.
But again, in terms of rankings, this is an upset in the making.
Oklahoma State has a good offense and can certainly climb back into this game. The problem is that they haven't stopped Texas A&M's high-powered offense yet.
Scoring points is one thing. Keeping the other team off of the board is quite another.
How Will Voter’s React?
Unless another team ahead of them loses, it's hard to see Texas A&M doing much more than leapfrogging Oklahoma State.
Still, from a long term point of view, this would undeniably be a quality win.
Oklahoma State will fall out of the top 10. Actually, as this is their first big test of the season, they may fall out of the top 15.
Will Oklahoma State Come Back?
Anything is possible, but I don't see it happening. Overcoming a 17-point deficit is extremely difficult when the team you are opposing is as good as Texas A&M.
Two things need to happen for a comeback to happen.
One is that Oklahoma State's offense needs to get into gear.
The second is that they need to contain Texas A&M.
I can see No. 1 happening, but not No. 2.
Who Benefits Most from Oklahoma State's Collapse?
Texas A&M benefits the most. It sounds obvious, but they are the team that's really helped in all ways here.
It's not just this game, but what this game will do to the polls. Texas A&M will move up at least one spot.
They will also have a big win under their belt. That will help them in the polls down the road, but also with their confidence in later big games.
