Top 6 Clever Topics for so Very Clever Guy's Girls Heading into Week 4

Hilary LiDestriJun 5, 2018

OK, So Very Clever Guy’s Girls, Week 4 officially kicked off last night when North Carolina fell to Cincinnati.  I know what you’re thinking–who cares, right?

Let me tell you who cares–most dudes.  They would rather watch Appalachian State vs. Wabash College than do just about anything else.  If you think you have plans this weekend with your college football-loving guy, make sure to check-in and be sure he hasn’t “forgotten.”

If he sounds surprised, as if he forgot THE GAME (don’t fool yourself–they will watch ANY game) was on, ask him if he wants to go some place and watch it.  Don’t invite yourself–let him lead you on that.  He might say, “You know what?  I should call Dave.”  Or, he might sigh heavily and say, “No, it’s no big deal.  What do you want to do?”  This secretly means, “Please go hang with the girls.”

Surprise him by being gracious and ask if he has plans for Sunday night (late game) or Monday night (Monday night football) and ask if you can make him dinner while he watches.  If he tells you he planned to watch it with “the guys” invite them too.  It might be ribs instead of filet mignon, but wooing the friends is an important a critical tool.  Find game day grub at www.soveryclever.com

I know it used to be just Saturday through Monday you had to be a football widow, and now it is Thursday through Monday, but it’s only for a few months.  “Please, can I go watch the game with the guys? I’ll make it up to you” (raised eyebrows often indicating something you already didn’t want to do).

Goodbye for Now Ohio State

1 of 6

So, what does Week 4 look like and what should you be prepared to discuss?

Well, for the first time in 254 weeks, The Ohio State University has been dropped from the Associated Press (AP) poll.  This is HUGE.

I think I’ll have a beer to celebrate this.  Hell, maybe I’ll have 254 between now and Sunday.  This thrills me, though I sympathize with one of my favorite people and voices of college football, Erin Hogan of ESPN Radio Austin.  He’s a fan; we tend to bicker about our respective teams.  Mine is the winningest program in college football.  His is mired in scandal.  It happens.

What First Year Coaches Are Kicking a Little A%$?

2 of 6

Speaking of scandal, let’s talk about some first-year coaches who are kicking a little ass.

Brady Hoke, Rich Rodriguez's replacement at Michigan, is 3-0.  I’d get excited, but we actually can go to 5-0 before we spiral into the abyss.  It used to be humiliating, but I’ve gotten used to it.  However, I like the energy and spirit I’m seeing Brady bring, so Go Blue.

Dana Hogorsen at West Virginia better bring his best game Saturday when they face LSU.  This will be the college GameDay game, so if you are bet-bound-and-determined to have the most typical sports commentator crush in the universe–you will find Kirk Herbstreit here.

Will Muschamp down at Florida State is a former assistant at the University of Texas and it looks like he paid attention.  No one is holding that loss to Oklahoma against him.  They are, after all, No. 1–AGAIN.  I can’t wait for their upset.

This weekend, however, FSU takes on Clemson, who was unranked until this week.  They are on FIRE after a victory over Auburn, who still is trying to find an identity after losing theirs.

David Shaw steps into what everyone thought were the perfect footprints of former coach Jim Harbaugh–yet he’s doing the same job, doing it well and relying on skilled gunslinger Andrew Luck to put up V's.  I guess anyone can coach Stanford.

And speaking of Jim Harbaugh, it’s not easy to lose to the Dallas Cowboys.  Hmmm.  Weird.

There is no reason not to ask, “Hey, who do you think the best first-year coach is right now?”

A HUGE debate will ensue and you can sit back, learn a little and then decide it’s Brady Hoke–kidding.  Make up your own mind so you can defend yourself if you must.  Or, go to the restroom or bar.

What Associated Press Poll Teams Are Still Undefeated?

3 of 6

There are only three teams in the top 25 who have losses.

Oregon dropped one to LSU on opening day as did TCU to Baylor.  WOW.  Then Florida State tried, but failed against Oklahoma last week.  They are still looking to prove they are coming back, so look out West Virginia.

A&M Riding High

4 of 6

Texas A&M is enjoying being ranked over TCU, Texas and Texas Tech.  The Aggies are trying to test their mettle and it will be tested this weekend against OK State.

Two teams cracked the top 25 this week: Clemson after that victory over Auburn and Illinois after a gritty game against Arizona State.

If you are lucky enough to be watching A&M play this weekend, you could ask the guys when the last time A&M was ranked higher than TCU, Texas and Tech.  It should generate some discussion for sure.

The Young Guns of University of Texas

5 of 6

The University of Texas is finding it's legs, not just in rushing the ball.

This young offense is becoming diverse and what is usually an ego-heavy team is decidedly light on arrogance.  These players, Case McCoy, Jaxon Shipley, and David Ash are so happy to be given an opportunity, they are true to their team and the agenda–and that agenda has always been and always will be: WIN.

Forget having fun or how the game is played, college football is all about the "W."

Who Is Taking Kellan Moore for Heisman?

6 of 6

Let’s talk a little Heisman.

I’m worried about Andrew Luck (Stanford).  Luck is sharp, although I think Kellen Moore of Boise State is likely the best quarterback on the field right now, I’m still rooting for Denard Robinson (University of Michigan).  Now that he has some protection, he is performing fantastically.  So Very Clever Girls, it’s never too early to talk “Heisman.”

Any time you want to engage a dude, just say, “Who is your pick for Heisman?”  You won’t have to offer any such pick–he will talk and talk and talk–but just to be safe, have one in mind.
