Which NFL Divisions Will Prove Complete Jokes?

John RozumJun 2, 2018

In recent NFL history, there hasn't been much debate as to which divisions were the worst in professional football.

And although that has not completely changed just yet, it could very well be on its way within the next couple of seasons.

That being said, however, here are the two worst divisions in the NFL.

AFC West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers

Only once since 1998 has any AFC West team represented the AFC in the Super Bowl (Oakland in 2002).

Only four times since '98 has the AFC West made it as far as the AFC title game (Oakland '00 and '02, Denver '05, San Diego '07).

Perhaps the division hit a new low when the Chargers won it with an 8-8 record in 2008.

Last season, the division's best team was the Oakland Raiders, who went 6-0 in the AFC West but were only 2-8 outside the division.

This season, the AFC West looks to have improved but the strides have only been minimal.

Until one of these teams beats New England, Pittsburgh, Baltimore or New York, the AFC West will keep taking a backseat.

NFC West: Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams

While the AFC West hit their new low in 2008 when the Chargers won it at 8-8, the NFC West did them one worse when Seattle won the division at 7-9 last year.

Sure, they upset the Saints in the wild-card round of the playoffs, but the playoffs are all about who gets hot at the right time more-so than a team's collective regular season resume.

When Arizona went to the Super Bowl they only finished with a record of 9-7, and you could make the argument that their 10-6 record a year later was the better Cardinals team (even though they didn't make it as far).

The NFC West has been pretty solid in the postseason over the past decade, but they could be so much better if they were relevant in the regular season.

And if the poor regular seasons continue as the norm, it will be a longtime before anyone from this division gets past the divisional round in the NFC playoffs.
