NFL Week 3 Predictions: Which Players Will Score the Most TDs?

John RozumSep 23, 2011

Putting all other football statistics aside, the only one that matters is the final point total. Obviously, points determine the outcome of each game.

But the difference is whether those points are scored mostly by TDs or field goals.

Make no mistake about it—getting three points when possible is crucial, because walking away from a scoring situation with no points can be devastating.

However, getting in the end zone is the ultimate goal with each possession of the game.

So with that said, here are three players who will score the most TDs in Week 3.

Note: This does not include QBs, as they account for other players scoring TDs.

Calvin Johnson: WR, Detroit Lions

The Lions currently rank No. 6 in passing yards per game (313.5), and WR Calvin Johnson is their best player.

This week, Detroit visits NFC North rival Minnesota, who has the 23rd-ranked pass defense, allowing 280 yards per game.

The only way Minnesota can control this game is by running the football with Adrian Peterson, which will work in the first half.

Thereafter, however, the Lions will pull away as Minnesota is very one dimensional and their defense hasn't yet faced an offense this explosive (sorry, Chargers fans).

Calvin Johnson should soar over every Vikings defensive back and score three TDs.

Maurice Jones-Drew: RB, Jacksonville Jaguars

If there's any hope for the Jacksonville Jaguars this week, it's RB Maurice Jones-Drew.

For one, he's played solidly through two games and the Jaguars are slated to be the Panthers' easiest matchup yet. As a result, it is reasonable to believe Carolina will throw the ball often and put Jacksonville's offense back on the field.

If the Jaguars want any chance at keeping pace, running screens with Jones-Drew will suffice, as will some draw plays.

They also have to try and slow the game down by pounding the rock with him, which in turn will keep pressure off rookie QB Blaine Gabbert, who is making his first career NFL start.

Jones-Drew will score three TDs, but the Jaguars will still lose by 10 points on the road.

Ray Rice: RB, Baltimore Ravens

This is the week that the Baltimore Ravens get back on track.

After Week 1, they were on cloud nine, but they fell from grace in a disappointing loss to Tennessee in Week 2.

Although Ray Rice has played well, it apparently wasn't good enough or the Ravens would have smashed the Titans.

Week 3, however, is a very favorable matchup for Baltimore. The St. Louis Rams are ranked last in the league in rush defense, allowing 177.5 yards per game on the ground.

Not only should Rice gain close to 150 rushing yards, he'll get close to 200 total with receiving yards factored into the equation.

All together, Rice should finish with four TDs as the Ravens rout the Rams in St. Louis.
