Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Ortiz Loss Opens Door for Rematch with Berto

Joseph HealyJun 7, 2018

The result of the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight leaves each fighter in an interesting position.

Mayweather won the bout, but the controversial ending has done little to endear him to fans. It's all but cemented that nothing short of fighting Manny Pacquiao will improve his standing with the public.

With Ortiz, you are left wondering what's next. He had been on a tear ever since his loss to Marcos Maidana, where it seemed that he quit.

He had been boxing as well as he had ever boxed coming into the Mayweather fight, but it was clear after the fight that he wasn't anywhere close to Mayweather's level yet.

What, then, does Ortiz need to do to get back on track and get his name back in the mix for title fights?

The obvious answer is a rematch with Andre Berto.

When the two got together back in April, they put on a show that was Fight of the Year material. The two fighters traded blows for the better part of an hour before Ortiz was announced the winner, handing Berto his first loss.

Much like Ortiz's fight against Maidana, Berto seems to have used his fight against Ortiz as fuel. After dropping that decision, Berto climbed back into the ring in September against Jan Zaveck and looked like a confident, motivated fighter on the way to winning Zaveck's IBF Welterweight Championship.

There is a lot to be gained by these two getting back together.

For starters, it would make for a great fight. Given how well their first fight went, there's no reason to believe a rematch would be any different.

A win for either of the fighters would also go a long way toward cementing them as a name brand fighter that might be able to carry a PPV card.

The winner would have to be in line for a title fight at some point down the road. An Ortiz-Mayweather rematch seems inevitable in a lot of ways and Berto, as a one-loss fighter, could give Mayweather, or any other champion in a similar weight class, a competitive fight.

Boxing is at a point right now where they need star power. Their most marketable stars are in the twilight of their respective careers, and there isn't anyone ready to fill the void right now.

Letting Ortiz and Berto go at it again could be a huge step in launching the career of a star in the mainstream boxing world for not just the winner, but both fighters.
