Week 3 Fantasy Football Projections: 3 Defenses in for Big Weeks

Joseph HealySep 23, 2011

I can't stress enough how much a high-scoring defense can boost a fantasy team's chance to win big in a given week. When you have a defense with a good matchup, they can score for you like a marquee offensive player.

The following three defenses will bring that type of production to the fantasy teams they are on.

San Diego Chargers

The Chargers defense is a good fantasy play to begin with, but they are even better in Week 3 considering they are taking on the Kansas City Chiefs, the NFL's resident train wreck.

The Chiefs have scored a total of ten points in two games and it will only get worse now that they have lost star running back Jamaal Charles.

Look for multiple interceptions on Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel and a point total for the Chiefs of less than ten.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Like the Chargers, the Steelers defense is already one of the better fantasy defenses in the league. They get consistent pressure on the quarterback, and led by Troy Polamalu, their defensive backs play the ball well.

Owners that have the Steelers defense on their roster get a gift this week, as they take on the Indianapolis Colts. I expect the Colts offense to get better as Kerry Collins gets more comfortable in his role, but they are still very much a work in progress.

Against the Steelers, Collins and the offense will be turnover-prone, bringing a huge score for owners of the Pittsburgh defense.

Dallas Cowboys

I'm hesitant to buy in to the Redskins and quarterback Rex Grossman's success. I still have the feeling that they will collapse at some point.

This Monday night, the Cowboys defense will be the beneficiary of their collapse. As a unit, their secondary leaves a little to be desired, but they can pressure a quarterback.

For two weeks, we have seen "Good Rex," but "Bad Rex" will come back in a big way this Monday when facing the Cowboys defense.
