Michael Vick Injury: Eagles Are Once Again Elite as Vick Closer to Playing

Gabe ZaldivarSep 22, 2011

The Philadelphia Eagles are one injury away from mediocrity. It seems that disaster has been averted for at least one week as Michael Vick inches closer to playing in Week 3.

The Eagles Nation can breath just a little bit easier on Thursday as rumors and news items surface that Michael Vick will play in Philadelphia's game against the New York Giants on Sunday.

Reuben Frank, a reporter covering the Eagles for CSNPhilly, tweeted that Vick looks primed to start after receiving a devastating blow last weekend.

Vick is coming off a hit he sustained Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons Sunday. The hit caused Vick to leave the game with a concussion and bloodied lip.

The word concussion causes fans to shutter as the long-term effects can never be accounted for. From a more immediate standpoint, a concussion can keep players out for a week to months.

Thankfully, Vick has showed little of the telltale symptoms that would trouble the medical staff. ESPN reported that all the necessary steps were taken to clear Vick.

"

Vick was evaluated and cleared by the independent nuerosurgeon [sic] in order to return to practice Thursday, the team announced, per the league's 2009 concussion policy for a player to "return to football activities."

"

The report also stated Vick shared snaps with backup Mike Kafka. The real question is whether Vick will be inserted into a game that the Eagles can win without Vick.

Their star quarterback makes Philadelphia an elite squad that will challenge for the Super Bowl, but they are not a subpar squad without him.

There is still enough juice on the field to contend with a Giants team that have been mired by injuries themselves.

The last thing they want to do is lose Vick for the season by bringing him back too early. If all goes according to plan, I am confident we will see Vick start the game, only to make way for Kafka if the game gets out of hand either way.

Fantasy owners may wish to insert their backup if they have one stout enough to garner them points. Vick may play, but nothing is certain at this point, just that he is healthy enough for a full workout.
