Mayweather vs Ortiz: Was the Fight Worthy of a Rematch?
After the controversial ending to the Mayweather-Ortiz welterweight bout, there was much left to be desired.
Of course, the next step for boxing fans would be the highly anticipated Pacquiao-Mayweather match. Who knows if that will ever come though. It is the missing link in both great fighter's career resume, but it hasn't happened yet after years of speculation.
So back to Mayweather-Ortiz, was it a good enough fight to tune into a second time? I think regardless of the dominance Mayweather showed in landing 73 punches to just 26 by Ortiz, it would definitely be a highly marketable rematch.
Ortiz was taken out in shocking fashion after a mid-ring embrace just after his best push of the fight where he landed a number of punches before his headbutt stopped the fight.
Mayweather's speed and experience overpowered the 10 years younger Victor Ortiz. There is no doubt, though, that Ortiz gained some much needed experience fighting an opponent of Floyd Mayweather's caliber. You can bet that Ortiz certainly won't be offering any hugs if there ever was a next time.
Even though Ortiz was in good spirits in his recent appearances following his knockout, he has to be disappointed in they way it all ended for him. It would be a highly anticipated rematch if it ever was scheduled. It would give Ortiz a chance to regain his image against a still undefeated boxing champion. And, for Mayweather, it would give him the chance to beat Ortiz in the way we all expected: the right way.
I think that it would be a good career move for both fighter's. Ortiz has now fought Mayweather and would have better training for a rematch because of that experience. Mayweather, on the other hand, no matter how strongly he feels about the way he won, heard the thundering boos after the fight was called. He loves to be loved and should gladly take a stab at beating Ortiz in a way that everyone would respect.
You never know where these boxer's will go with their next fight, but, if the opportunity ever came for a Mayweather-Ortiz rematch, it would be to the delight of the fans and Ortiz. I would also expect Mayweather to want the chance to clear his name after the unguarded knockout he received in victory this time around.
