2012 NFL Mock Draft: 4 Players Who Could Unseat Andrew Luck as the Top Pick

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

Andrew Luck is the consensus No. 1 overall best prospect in this year's draft class.

There is no disputing that. I think he is going to be one of the best pro quarterbacks in the league for years to come and he is a can’t-miss prospect.

However, certain teams already have a franchise signal caller and have needs elsewhere they must address.

Whoever lands the No. 1 pick will most likely have a need for Luck, but let’s take a look at four guys who have the possibility, given the right circumstances, to surpass Luck and become the top overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

1 of 4

This 6-foot-6, 285-pound behemoth has the size, speed, athleticism and ability to become the No. 1 overall pick this year.

Coples himself knows he is No. 2 on most big boards but wants to move up.

"I want to make sure that everyone knows I'm No. 1," he said. "I don't want to just be No. 1 with certain people. I want to be No. 1 with everybody. ... That's my whole goal, something I want to accomplish the next couple of months."

This kid would be a great fit on the upstart Carolina Panthers, who are playing very well with Cam Newton but have a suspect defense.

If they lose enough games to get the No. 1 overall pick, there is no chance they draft Luck, so look for them to get Coples.

Matt Kalil, OT, Southern Cal

2 of 4

This kid is Carolina Panthers’ Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil’s little brother. The guy is a natural left tackle and he does an excellent job protecting Matt Barkley’s blindside at USC.

He is going to be needed by a team like the Buffalo Bills, if they fall apart this season, or the Seattle Seahawks, if they trade for a QB at some point.

His position is one of the most underrated in all of football and having a franchise LT that can be plugged into your line from day one of training camp until the end of a long career cannot be valued enough.

Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

3 of 4

This kid just produces. He may not be the biggest, strongest or tallest wide receiver in the draft, but he is probably the best.

In 2010, he snagged a ridiculous 111 catches for 1,782 yards and 20 touchdowns. For good measure, he ran the ball 4 times for 77 yards and a touchdown.

These are insane numbers and an NFL team that needs a franchise WR cannot ignore those.

If a team like the Browns ends up with the No. 1 pick, I can see them going this route or with this next kid…

Alshon Jeffrey, WR, South Carolina

4 of 4

This kid is a physical freak. At 6-foot-4, 230-pounds with a natural ability to play football, Jeffrey has not had quite the production as Blackmon but looks like a better NFL prospect.

In 2010, he had 88 receptions for 1517 yards and nine touchdowns. The kid can work magic when the ball is in the air and seems to always find a way to make a big catch.

I expect it to be a close battle between him and Blackmon as to which receiver comes off the board first. Perhaps one of them will find themselves being selected No. 1 overall by a team in dire need of a receiver.
