Michael Vick vs. Tony Romo: Which QB Is Dumber for Playing Through Injury?

Ryan PhillipsSep 22, 2011

Tony Romo and Michael Vick are both currently struggling to make it back from injuries to play in Week 3. While Romo is struggling through a broken rib and punctured lung suffered in the Dallas Cowboys' Week 2 win against the San Francisco 49ers, Vick is recovering from a concussion he sustained in the Philadelphia Eagles' Sunday night loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Neither guy will be fully healthy when his team steps on the field for its third game, but both guys insist they will play. While I don't think either guy should rush his way back, I'm certain that Vick should pump the breaks and hold off playing through his injury.

Concussions are a serious deal. Even though the one Vick suffered was deemed "slight" it shouldn't matter. Oftentimes concussions become a recurring problem for an athlete, and if Vick isn't fully recovered and takes a shot to the head on Sunday against the New York Giants, a small problem could become a career-threatening one.

Unless he is 100 percent fully recovered from his injury there should be no way the Eagles allow their star quarterback to take the field. The risk of long-term injury is far too high to allow him to play in any game, let alone a Week 3 contest with a weak Giants team.

Romo's injuries, while serious, can't really get any worse than they already are. He will also be wearing a protective Kevlar vest if he takes the field Monday night against the Washington Redskins. Unless that vest and his injuries combine to alter his throwing motion—which can happen—putting undo strain on his shoulder and arm, Romo's situation can't get worse than it already is.

When you're dealing with concussions it is always smart to err on the side of caution. At this point I can't believe the Eagles are even entertaining the thought of allowing Vick to play on Sunday without sitting out for any period of time.
