Tony Romo Injury Update: What Absence from Practice Means for Cowboys

Jeremy ReidSep 22, 2011

Tony Romo is currently being administered another CT scan to check the progression of his punctured lung. The puncture has already been called "small" enough to heal in a couple days.

As a Dallas Cowboy or a fan of America's team you would love to see Tony suited up and taking snaps before Monday's divisional showdown with the Washington Redskins. Looking at the bigger picture, you see a backup in Jon Kitna who is of the older variety getting more snaps with the first team. This is a major plus for the Dallas Cowboys.

Kitna came in and went 4-5 as the starter last season and proved capable of winning some gutsy games. On his three drives in relief last Sunday he led the offense to a touchdown and also threw two interceptions. These reps in practice will alleviate any timing issues he had Sunday leading to the interceptions.

Romo has already said he will play and I have no doubt he will. It is good to see the Cowboys front office taking all precautions for their franchise quarterback here. Jerry Jones said Tony Romo is one of two or three pieces that will take them where they want to go and he knows it's no time to throw away another season in week three.

All precautions aside, Romo was able to come back last week and perform well in immense pain.  He took an oral painkiller to return, he will get injections this week to help even more. The Dallas Cowboys already contacted the same company that makes Kevlar rib protectors for Michael Vick, Unequal Technologies, to keep the ribs and lung as protected as possible Monday.

While these tests are keeping Romo out of his weekly work routine, they are only allowing the healing process to take its due course. An extra day out of action, with the game being on Monday Night Football, only helps Romo's cause.

Again, the Cowboys should not feel these tests are ultimately bearing bad news, they are precautions the team must take. Romo will suit up barring any new critical information on the injury.  The first team reps for Jon Kitna will prove important if Romo takes any big hits and has to leave for a few series again.

Check back for more updates on Tony Romo who is still expected to be available Monday at this juncture. In the meantime, the No. 2 quarterback Jon Kitna will be preparing for a possible guest appearance against the Redskins.
