NFL Picks Week 3: 3 Teams To Bet The House On

Ryan PhillipsSep 22, 2011

While I'm never one to endorse gambling in heavy amounts—because of course I would never do such a thing—Week 3 of the NFL season gives us three matchups that are almost certain victories for teams involved.

Using what we know from the season's first two weeks, it's pretty easy to figure out which teams will roll to wins in Week 3. Three teams have what may be perfect matchups for them this weekend, and it will end up showing on the scoreboard.

San Diego Chargers over the Kansas City Chiefs

1 of 3

The Kansas City Chiefs will travel to Qualcomm Stadium to take on the San Diego Chargers Sunday afternoon, and it could get ugly fast.

The Chiefs have played like the NFL's worst team through the first two weeks of the season. In addition to looking horrendous, Kansas City has also lost (arguably) its two best players for the year, as safety Eric Berry and running back Jamaal Charles both have torn ACLs.

Meanwhile the Chargers are smarting after essentially handing a 35-21 win to the New England Patriots. The Chargers had four turnovers in that game despite putting up impressive offensive numbers. You can bet Philip Rivers will have his troops focused to rack up more yardage against a Kansas City defense that is allowing an NFL-worst 44.5 points per game.

Expect Rivers to go absolutely nuts on Sunday, and expect San Diego's defense to shut down an anemic Chiefs offense that is averaging an NFL-worst 110.5 passing yards per game.

The Chargers should roll in this one as they send the defending AFC West champs to an 0-3 start.

Pittsburgh Steelers over the Indianapolis Colts

2 of 3

The Pittsburgh Steelers looked awful in a 35-7 Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. This past Sunday they gained a measure of redemption with a 24-0 pasting of the Seattle Seahawks, but they still have work to do.

The Steelers travel to Indianapolis for a Sunday night matchup with the Colts, and will likely continue their crusade to wipe Week 1 from all of our memories.

Against an incredibly soft Colts front seven, expect Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall to run wild. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh's vaunted defense will be in full-attack mode against an Indianapolis offense that is still reeling from the loss of star quarterback Peyton Manning.

The Steelers will almost certainly use Mendenhall as a battering ram, then allow quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to throw over the top of what will be a worn down Colts defense.

This one could get ugly fast, as the Colts are not likely to have an answer for Pittsburgh on either side of the ball.

Arizona Cardinals over the Seattle Seahawks

3 of 3

If the Chiefs are the NFL's worst team, the 0-2 Seattle Seahawks aren't far behind.

This weekend the Seahawks welcome the 1-1 Arizona Cardinals to town, and quarterback Kevin Kolb and his team could put up some big numbers in this one.

It's not that the Seahawks are so bad defensively that they will give up a ton of yards, it's that their offense can't do anything, so Arizona will likely crush them in time of possession.

Seattle currently ranks 28th in the NFL with 144 passing yards per game, and 32nd with 47.5 rushing yards per game on offense. Not surprisingly their 191.5 yards of total offense per game puts the Seahawks dead last in the league.

While the team's defense hasn't been terrible, it has essentially been no chance to be successful because the Tarvaris Jackson-led offense hasn't done anything to help.

Arizona lost a 22-21 heartbreaker to the Washington Redskins on a late field goal in Week 2. The Cardinals have shown the ability to put up yards on offense (359 per game), and Kolb looks very comfortable in the team's offense already.

This pick is based purely on the fact that Seattle has scored just 13 points through two games, and I just don't see them fixing things offensively for a while.

Given the huge time of possession and field position advantage they are almost sure to get, I think the Cardinals will roll in this one.
