Florida Marlins' New Logo: Why Hideous New Look Is Good for Marlins

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

When the Florida Marlins' new logo leaked out earlier this week, it was met with a collective howl from everyone who saw it. The feedback was plentiful, and the criticism was harsh.

But when you really look at it and study it, it is not as bad as it seems.

Even players on the Marlins have not been hot on the design. Outfielder Logan Morrison wasn't sure what to think of the new threads, other than to say that the "M" reminds him of the one used in the board game Monopoly.

But this is hardly the worst looking uniform that we have ever seen in sports, professional or college.

In fact, you can make a case that it is an improvement for the boys of South Beach. They have had the same boring Marlin soaring over the bland "M" for years, and with the new stadium opening in 2012, it was time for a change.

Here are three reasons to get excited about the all-new Marlins' logo when it makes its official debut next season.

Originality

Let's be honest, most sports logos nowadays are bland and have no thought behind them.

And some are so old and outdated that fans and analysts have to make up excuses by saying that it is a part of the team's heritage and the tradition, and if you mess with traditions, the entire future of the franchise will change.

When the Oregon Ducks changed their football uniforms five years ago, everyone said that they were hideous and took away from the game.

Fast forward five years, and everyone loves the originality of the Ducks' uniforms.

At least the Marlins are trying something new with their design. Even though it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is different.

Merchandise Sales

Even if something looks hideous, people are going to buy it because it is new.

The Marlins are a low-revenue franchise and need all the help selling merchandise that they can get. Sure, paying to keep your players helps, but we don't have time for rational solutions.

If the craze over the new logo only lasts for one season, it is going to be worth it to this franchise.

Just wait and see how many Marlins hats you see walking down the streets of your neighborhood as soon as they become available.

Publicity

Unless you are a baseball fan, how much time do you really spend talking about the Florida Marlins? How many of you were even aware there was still a baseball franchise in Miami?

Based on the attendance at their home games, there are not a lot of people in Miami aware that there is still a franchise in the city.

At least with this new logo, people are actually talking about the Marlins.

And they say that any publicity is good publicity.
