2012 NFL Mock Draft: 5 Teams That Should Tank Their Seasons for Andrew Luck
If Andrew Luck is the next Peyton Manning, then at least half the league, probably more, should consider drafting or trading up for him.
The Stanford signal caller is unlike any other quarterback prospect that has come out of college in the last decade.
He's smart, pro-ready and has athleticism that pales only in comparison to complete dual-threat quarterbacks.
His arm strength, mental aptitude and instincts for the game of football have had scouts drooling for two years now.
When the draft finally rolls around next April, the only way a team doesn't take him No. 1 overall is if the Panthers are the team at No. 1.
As we get set for Week 3 of the NFL season, there are a few teams that have already seen their season destroyed before it ever really got started.
Here are five teams that should tank the rest of this year in an attempt to land Andrew Luck.
Kansas City Chiefs
1 of 5The Chiefs' two best players are out for the year.
Jamaal Charles and Eric Berry, two young, dynamic play makers, are irreplaceable in Kansas City. They also lost tight end Tony Moeaki for the year as well.
To make matters worse, the absence of Charlie Weis calling the plays has turned one of the league's most efficient offenses into a complete mess.
Quarterback Matt Cassel looks lost, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe cannot get things started, and the Chiefs are already 0-2.
This team won't defend their AFC West crown, and they have little else to play for without their star players.
However, they have plenty to lose for in Andrew Luck.
Indianapolis Colts
2 of 5How long is Peyton Manning going to be out for? Nobody knows.
Will Peyton Manning ever be the same? Nobody knows that either.
What we do know is that the last time the Colts needed a guy compared to Peyton Manning they drafted him.
His name happened to be Peyton Manning, but that is besides the point.
Indianapolis is horrendous without No. 18 under center and there may never be a better opportunity to get his long term replacement than this year.
Even if Manning comes back and plays for a year or two, they'll have Luck to fall back on.
Miami Dolphins
3 of 5The Miami Dolphins have a franchise left tackle in Jake Long, a potential long-term solution at center, a rookie running back that could be a long-term answer, but no franchise quarterback.
Coach Tony Sparano is a sitting duck on a team that has been atrocious at home the last two years, and if he misses the playoffs this year he is out of a job.
The Dolphins have to know that Chad Henne is not their answer, but they have assembled a good, young defense and have some offensive pieces.
The only thing truly missing from this equation is a quarterback like Andrew Luck.
With the Patriots and Jets dominating the division, the Dolphins have to do something to change things up.
Losing out may be a difficult task, but the payoff would be worth it.
Seattle Seahawks
4 of 5The Seahawks are bad and they know it.
Their big offseason netted them a bunch of young, inexperienced pieces but they are far from competing.
Tarvaris Jackson is not the answer at quarterback, and neither is Charlie "I Love My Clipboard As Much As My Hair" Whitehurst.
Pete Carroll can coach this team, but they need a franchise quarterback under center.
Luck would get the opportunity to stay on the West Coast, and this team would be much more formidable for the future.
Denver Broncos
5 of 5The Broncos have enough controversy at the quarterback position as it is already.
But since they do not know what to do with Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow, the only viable solution is to wipe all three out and bring in "the" guy.
John Elway's Stanford ties are undeniable, and with John Fox inheriting all three quarterbacks currently on the roster it is far from crazy to think he wouldn't want a fresh start.
Luck satisfies everything this team needs.
They have talented youth at a number of positions, but they are not nearly ready to compete for the postseason.
Rather than pretending they are, they should bottom out and gun Luck with everything they have.
