2012 NFL Draft: Landry Jones Making His Case to Be a Top 10 Pick

Jon DoveSep 21, 2011

Everyone knows about Andrew Luck and his golden arm. However, the 2012 NFL Draft has several other intriguing quarterback prospects.  Oklahoma's Landry Jones has been one of the guys making a push to the top of the draft.  Although only a Junior, the quarterback has the mental make up and physical ability to be a potential top 10 selection.

Jones' physical attributes and production are what has him gaining draft attention.  However, he is still a work in progress.  In Week 2, Jones faced a tough Florida State defense on the road and made a few mistakes against the swarming pressure of the Seminoles.  It was a big test for him.

Jones finished with a stat line of 18-27, 199 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.  Those are not overly impressive stats, but Jones was able to lead his team to victory.

Oklahoma opened the game featuring a lot of wide receiver screens.  Jones did a nice job of quickly getting the ball into the hands of the playmakers.  He also put the ball out in front of his targets, allowing for yards after the catch.  These wide receiver screens are only successful if the quarterback is accurate and quick with the football.

It is apparent that Jones has good arm strength.  The ball jumps off his hand, while reaching his target with good zip.  However, the most impressive thing is how quickly Jones makes decisions. He does a great job of analyzing post snap information. Making consistently sound decisions is something he needs to improve on, but he has shown good progress to this point.

The Florida State defense brought a ton of pressure, but Jones handled it well. He kept his eyes downfield searching for an open target. The one mistake came on an interception, where Jones should have thrown the ball away.

While Oklahoma is mainly a shotgun team, they do run some sets from under the center. Jones has a quick and balanced drop back. His ability to quickly get through his drops provides him with more time to scan the field.

Jones showed his leadership ability during a big fourth quarter drive, which ended up being the game winner.

Overall, Jones has the physical skills, mental makeup, and experience to consider entering the draft. He needs to continue to produce, but looks like a possible top 10 selection.
