Malcom Floyd: Why San Diego Chargers WR Should Rest Against Kansas City Chiefs

Alex KaySep 21, 2011

Malcom Floyd had two catches for 59 yards for the San Diego Chargers when they went up against the New England Patriots last Sunday.

He was going to have a monster game across from Vincent Jackson against the undersized, inexperienced and unreliable Patriots secondary until he strained a muscle during the second quarter.

Floyd did not return after leaving, which is often an indicator that a player will be very questionable to appear the next week, especially when it happens before the half.

Andrew Burer of the San Diego Union-Tribune noted: “Head coach Norv Turner indicated that [Floyd] could miss time in practice this week and potentially the game Sunday.”

Even if Floyd could possibly go on Sunday, why would the team risk their No. 2 receiver—and best option when Jackson and Antonio Gates are doubled—against an atrocious Kansas City Chiefs squad?

The Chiefs have given up over 261 yards through the air and 126 yards on the ground each game this season.

That's against Detroit and Buffalo.

They have scored a combined 10 points and given up 89.

Can you imagine how badly their division rival San Diego is going to beat them? Do you think that Philip Rivers and company forgot that they lost their playoff spot to this team last year?

No chance.

I expect the team to be firing on all cylinders to show dominance against their AFC West foe and seek revenge for their loss last week to the Patriots.

Rivers is going to carve up their terrible secondary no matter who he is throwing to. Ryan Matthews and Mike Tolbert are going to decimate their weak running defense.

If I were head coach Norv Turner, I would sit anyone who has a fringe injury and give him a week to recover.

Playing the Chiefs this season is a glorified bye week and they can afford to give some injured guys a rest. Look for Floyd to miss this game and be back for Week 4 against Miami.
