Terrell Owens: Why We Can Safely Assume Injured WR's Career Is Over

Ryan PhillipsSep 21, 2011

Without a doubt one of the more controversial players of the NFL's past decade has been wide receiver Terrell Owens. While he is currently a free agent, the five-time Pro Bowler had hoped to return to the game after rehabbing a torn ACL.

That may not be a possibility.

Owens' recovery from his knee injury has been extremely slow and the 37-year-old has apparently taken drastic measures to help things along. Owens reportedly traveled to South Korea to receive stem-cell therapy aimed at healing his knee.

The fact that Owens needed to seek out such a remedy tells me that he's not even close to seeing the field. At this point—and at his age—it is highly unlikely that he could make an impact at the NFL-level ever again.

While he hasn't exactly been a model citizen during his career, no one can deny how good Owens was on the field. If his career is indeed over, he finishes with 1,078 receptions for 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns.

Those are phenomenal numbers and put him alongside some of the greatest to ever play the game.

Owens is currently sixth all time in receptions, but with another full season could easily surpass Marvin Harrison (1,102) for second place on the all-time list. Owens already occupies second place on the all-time receiving yardage list and is tied with Randy Moss for second in receiving touchdowns.

Love him or hate him, there is no doubting what Owens has done on the field. He is clearly one of the best receivers to ever play and is destined for the Hall of Fame.

At this point, it's probably best to assume that he's not going to return to an NFL roster, even if he makes a serious attempt at a comeback.
