UFC: Georges St-Pierre and the Top MMA Fighter from Each Country

Tim McTiernanOct 17, 2011

The UFC has recently announced that they're planning to do international seasons of The Ultimate Fighter in an effort to expand to new markets.

In addition to The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC has been holding new events in new countries every year.

In this year, the UFC will have gone to Australia, Canada, Brazil, England and of course, the U.S.

Next year, the UFC will return to Japan, and will surely visit other new locales.

With this in mind, let's take a look at the top MMA fighter from a few countries around the world.

France- Cheick Kongo

1 of 10

We'll kick this list off with France, and heavyweight contender Cheick Kongo.

Kongo is a current UFC heavyweight, and is one of the most physically-intimidating fighters in all of MMA.

In addition to his MMA record, he has a kickboxing record of 21-2, with 12 KO's.

Kongo holds a professional record of 16-6-2, and is 9-4-1 in the UFC.

Other Notable Fighters: Cyrille Diabate, Christian M'Pumbu

Australia- Brian Ebersole

2 of 10

Next up is the land down under, and Brian Ebersole.

Ebersole is one of the more unorthodox fighters in the UFC, and I'm not just talking about his fighting style.

Yes, that is an arrow shaved into his chest hair.

In his MMA career, Ebersole is 48-14-1 [1 NC], and is currently 2-0 in the UFC.

Other Notable Fighters: George Sotiropoulos, Kyle Noke

England- Michael Bisping

3 of 10

And now we're going across the pond to England, where Michael Bisping is the top fighter.

Bisping is a current coach on season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter, and he is getting more publicity to the American market.

Bisping is a top 10 middleweight in the UFC, and is likely two or three wins away from a title shot.

Bisping is 21-3 in his MMA career, and is 11-3 in the UFC.

Other Notable Fighters: Dan Hardy, John Hathaway, James Wilks, Ross Pearson, Paul Daley

Sweden- Alexander Gustafsson

4 of 10

We'll stay in Europe and head over to Sweden, as the next fighter on the list is Alexander Gustafsson.

Gustafsson is a current prospect in the UFC light heavyweight division, and is one of the 10 best up-and-comers in the UFC today.

Gustafsson was last seen at UFC 133, where he sent Matt Hamill into retirement via second-round TKO.

Gustafsson has a pro MMA record of 12-1, and is 4-1 in the UFC.

Russia- Dennis Siver

5 of 10

Moving further east we reach Russia, where the top fighter these days is Dennis Siver, who is a Russian-born German.

Siver is a lightweight contender in the UFC, and possesses a devastating spinning back kick.

Siver is another fighter with some professional kickboxing experience, as he is the former German kickboxing champion.

Siver has a professional record of 19-7, with a UFC record of 8-4.

Other Notable Fighters: Alexander Shlemenko, Sergei Kharitonov, Fedor Emelianenko

Japan- Yushin Okami

6 of 10

We're just going straight across the globe! Next up is Japan, where the top fighter is Yushin Okami.

Okami is one of the top three middleweights in the UFC, and he has been described by Dana White as the best Japanese fighter ever.

Okami has a professional MMA record of 26-6, and a UFC record of 10-3.

Other Notable Fighters: Yoshihiro Akiyama, Takanori Gomi, Michihiro Omigawa, Hatsu Hioki, Norifumi Yamamoto

Netherlands- Alistair Overeem

7 of 10

Up next we'll travel back west to the Netherlands where the top dog is none other than Alistair Overeem.

Overeem is the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, and a current UFC heavyweight who is scheduled to fight for a No. 1 contender spot.

Overeem has some of the best striking in MMA, as he won the K-1 World Grand Prix just last year. He has a professional MMA record of 35-11 [1 NC].

Canada- Georges St-Pierre

This one should come as no surprise to anyone.

Georges St-Pierre is the current UFC welterweight champion, and is the No. 1 Canadian fighter in the world.

GSP is one of the top two pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and is claimed by many as one of the best of all time.

Other Notable Fighters: Rory MacDonald, Sam Stout, TJ Grant, Mark Hominick

Brazil- Anderson Silva

9 of 10

Another choice that should be no surprise is Anderson Silva as the top Brazilian fighter.

Not only is Silva the top Brazilian fighter, but he is undoubtedly the top MMA fighter in the entire world today.

Silva is the current UFC middleweight champion, and is on an unprecedented 15-fight win streak, with 14 of those being in the UFC, and nine of them being title defenses.

Silva has a professional MMA record of 31-4 and a UFC record of 14-0.

United States: Jon Jones

10 of 10

This was a tough one to call between Jon Jones and Frankie Edgar, but in the end, I went with Jones.

Jon Jones is the current UFC light heavyweight champion, and is the youngest champion in UFC history.

Jones is viewed by many as the future of MMA, and some say he could someday be known as the greatest fighter of all time.

For now, he's just the light heavyweight champion, and the best fighter from the United States.

Other Notable Fighters: Cain Velasquez, Brock Lesnar, Rashad Evans, Chael Sonnen, Jon Fitch, BJ Penn, Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, Kenny Florian, Chad Mendes, Dominick Cruz, Joseph Benavidez
