Mayweather vs. Ortiz: 3 Things We Learned from This Bout

Richard LangfordSep 21, 2011

The Victor Ortiz fight has come and gone, and we hardly had time to realize it was here. Just because this one was over in four rounds, though, doesn't mean we couldn't learn a thing or three from the action.

Like these tasty morsels of insight:

No. 1: Floyd Mayweather is still "Money."

"Money" Mayweather has lost nothing. The 34-year-old hadn't fought in 16 months. It seemed inevitable he would display declining quickness in this match. Wrong!

Mayweather looked as good as ever. His lightning fast reflexes were honed. He was slipping and ducking away from Ortiz's best punches with ease. Once he did avoid the punches he still found himself poised to pounce with lethal counter attacks.

At some point, age is going to catch up to Mayweather, but it certainly hasn't happened yet.

No. 2: Boxing needs Mayweather.

This bout was surrounded with all the hype that all title fights in boxing used to carry. Mayweather was a heavy favorite against his over-matched opponent, but you never would have guessed by the energy surrounding this bout.

Mayweather is one of the few fighters that can still earn the attention of a wide audience. The Twitterverse was filled with tweets about this event before and after the fight.

Boxing needs Mayweather, and it needs him to fight Manny Pacquiao. That match would put boxing in the headlines like at no other time since Mike Tyson bit off Evander Holyfield's ear.

No. 3: Never hug "Money."

You may want to hug your own money. Other than the germs and residue of various elements that have passed through those bills, it is probably harmless. The same cannot be said for hugging "Money," the person.

Ortiz got away with it once, but after he went for the second hug Mayweather laid down the law. Consider it point taken, Floyd. We will never hug you!
