Jaguars vs. Panthers: TV Schedule, Live Streaming, Radio, Game Time and More

Ryan RudnanskySep 20, 2011

The Carolina Panthers, led by rookie quarterback Cam Newton, have gone 0-2, but they appear to be playing much better than they did last season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, however, appear to have taken a step backdespite a 1-1 recordas they got destroyed by the New York Jets in Week 2, 32-3.

The Panthers will be looking for their first win of the season, which would undoubtedly be a confidence boost for Newton, as the Jaguars hope to get back into the race with the Houston Texans for the AFC South title (sorry, Colts fans, it ain't looking too good).

What's at Stake?

The Panthers have an opportunity to win their first game of the season and prove they aren't the same 2-14 team as last season. The Jaguars lost in a blowout to the Jets, and their only win was a two-point squeaker against the Tennessee Titans.

The Jaguars, on the other hand, need to get back on their feet after an embarrassing defeat in New York (and no, that wasn't a pun about Rex Ryan's foot fetish).

With the Colts hurting from the loss of Peyton Manning, the Jaguars have their best chance at winning a division title in years after just missing out of the playoffs in 2010.

FantasyStart 'Em, Sit 'Em and Sleeper

Start 'Em: Cam Newton, Panthers

How could you not start Cam Newton after what he's done so far?

He has the second-most fantasy points among quarterbacks (behind Tom Brady) and he's passed for more than 400 yards in each of his first two games (83 passing attempts already).

The Jaguars have a decent secondary, but how can you not start Newton after he racked up 29 points against the Green Bay Packers?

Sit 'Em: Mercedes Lewis, Jaguars

Lewis has probably taken the biggest hit since former quarterback David Garrard's departure.

He racked up 700 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns with Garrard last season. So far, he has two catches for 28 yards.

You know why? Because Luke McCown is "throwing" him the ball.

Sleeper: Jonathan Stewart, Panthers

Stewart can be one of the most frustrating players in fantasy, because you never really know what he's going to give you each week.

But he had eight catches for 100 yards last game, which means the Panthers will start getting him involved in Newton's passing game more often. That can only be a good thing.

What They're Saying

Don Banks of SI.com reports on the brilliance of Newton so far this season:

"

"There have been just six quarterbacks in league history to string together back-to-back 400-yard passing games, and Newton (28 of 46 against the Packers) is the first of those to do it in the opening two games of his career. You can accurately say Newton has lost two games thus far, but you can't say he has failed."

"

Jaguars receiver Mike Thomas appears to be defending McCown over rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert, via the St. Augustine Record:

"

“Personally, you would hope Luke gets a chance to redeem himself. I think you would always prefer that a guy who has a bad game would get a chance to redeem himself, but everybody knows the situation around here too.”

"

Jaguars Player to Watch: Maurice Jones-Drew

Jones-Drew, coming off of meniscus surgery this winter, appears to have regained the explosiveness he's always shown.

After rushing 97 yards in Week 1, he added 88 yards rushing and 19 yards receiving against the Jets in Week 2. Jones-Drew is a joy to watch every time he touches the football.

Panthers Player to Watch: Cam Newton

Is this really a surprise? All eyes are on Newton at this point. His Week 1 performance was impressive enough, but throwing for over 400 yards against the defending champs?

If Newton keeps playing like this, he'll live up to the hype surrounding him at the NFL draft.

Key Matchup: Cam Newton vs. Jaguars secondary

The Jaguars defense is better than the score would suggest in Week 2 vs. the Jets. The Jaguars offense has been awful, turning the ball over four times against the Jets and putting way too much pressure on the defense.

Newton has another test against the secondary this week. It's hard to say he's going to have a whole lot of trouble after that performance against the Packers, but you never know. He has thrown a few interceptions, and the Jaguars picked off Jets QB Mark Sanchez twice in Week 2.

Prediction: Carolina 24, Jacksonville 17
