Arsenal vs. Shrewsbury Town Results: Gunners Prove They Still Know How to Win

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

Normally, a win by Arsenal over Shrewsbury Town would be nothing to write home about for the Gunners. This hasn't been a normal year for the Gunners, though.

Arsenal has been reeling off bad performances like they were Elvis during the fat and sedated years. Heading into this match, their lone victory in their past four had been a 1-0 win against Swansea.

And this is a Swansea team that Shrewsbury had just beat. Shrewsbury entered the match after notching its third consecutive upset.

Shrewsbury scored a victory against Derby prior to the Swansea match.

Injuries to Jack Wilshere, Thomas Vermaelen and Sebastien Squillaci has put extra stress on the reeling Gunners lineup.

Early on, it looked like those injuries may have been too much for the Gunners to overcome. They fell behind 1-0 when James Collins found the net in the 16th minute.

Shrewsbury battled and stood its ground following the goal. It held the score for 17 minutes, but the Gunner began to take control of the match.

Kieran Gibbs tied the game for the Gunners in the 33rd minute, and that 1-1 score remained until halftime.

The second half of this contest was all Arsenal. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain drilled the go ahead in the 58th minute, and Yossi Benoyoun added insurance in the 78th minute.

It was an impressive second half for the Gunners. Although it came against a team they should have handled easily, it is refreshing to see they still know how to put the hammer down and close out a team—any team.
