Indianapolis Colts: Fear Not, Jeff George Says He's Ready to Help

Tom EdringtonJun 1, 2018

This one had to be a cruel joke.

Extraordinarily cruel.

We're talking about kicking around a dead dog carcass cruel.

We're talking Jeff George.

Who?

Seems like George, who will soon turn 44, which makes him nearly nine years older than the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Raheem Morris, says he can help his old team, the Indianapolis Colts.

Now, we've already scoffed at the notion of bringing Brett Favre out of retirement but this declaration by George, well, it's time to take scoffing to an entirely new level.

This is like Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown for the umpteenth time.

This is Jeff George, the guy chosen by the Colts as the No. 1 pick in the 1989 draft. They gave him the biggest contracts ever for a rookie in NFL history and he promptly gave them four years of untreated sewage from the quarterback position. George led the Colts, if you want to call it leading, to a four-year mark of 14-35.

This is Jeff George who made the rounds of the NFL teams like a night watchman at Motel Hell, knocking on every door he could find.

Surely this is a hoax.

But no, Sam Farmer of the L.A. Times spoke to George and offered it up in one of his tweets. "just talked to Jeff George who lives in Indy and says he could pick up the Colts offense in a matter of day."

Okay, that's fine, George said he could "pick it up in a matter of days" but he didn't say he could run it. And you'd have to ask yourself if a 44-year-old guy who no one wanted years ago could really play now?

Of course not.

If calling Brett Favre sounds ridiculous, then calling Jeff George is something for the SyFy channel.

Long shot? It's almost like someone showing up on George's doorstep with the invitation:

"Hey Jeff, we need a sparring partner for Apollo Creed."

Yeah, that kinda long shot.

Long shot?

It's a bigger long shot than the Colts winning their next 14 games.

Isn't it?
