NFL Power Rankings: Checking PFT's Week 2 Rankings

Zach KruseSep 20, 2011

This time of year, everyone is playing "NFL expert" in putting together a set of power rankings that are both completely arbitrary and useless in the grand scheme of things. But everyone also loves to see how his or her favorite team stacks up against another, so power rankings are always in high demand.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk put his out today, and I did the same. To read his complete list and reasons, click here.

Here are how my rankings and Florio's look against each other:

As you'll notice, there are quite a few differences in the rankings.

Let's just start in the top 10. I obviously feel that the Saints, Chargers, Falcons and Lions are all higher on his list than they should be.

The 1-1 Saints above the 2-0 Patriots makes almost zero sense to me. Yes, New Orleans rebounded nicely by beating up on the Bears at home in Week 2. But the Patriots beat a Chargers team (that Florio ranked No. 5) and Tom Brady looks better than he ever has in his Hall of Fame career. Not a huge discrepancy, but definitely something that caught my eye. Florio obviously likes what he sees in the Saints in 2011.

The Chargers are also too high at No. 5. They've only beat the Vikings, a team who we both have below No. 28, and they were powerless to stop Brady and Co. in Week 2. Until San Diego proves it's anything more than a top team on paper, it doesn't belong in the top 5.

The Falcons (No. 6 at PFT) look sloppy on both offense and defense in the first two weeks. They look like a team that could suffer a three- or four-win drop from 2010, when they won 13. If Michael Vick doesn't get injured in the third quarter Sunday night, I firmly believe the Falcons are sitting in an 0-2 hole.

I understand the case for the 2-0 Lions, however, as they have been one of the NFL's more impressive teams to date. Top 10 is surely where they belong early on.

Florio and I mostly agree on the middle 10, with the lone outlier being the Bills—who Florio has at No. 11. There's a case for them there, too. You can't fault a team for hanging 41 in Week 1 on the lowly Chiefs and then following that performance with an 18-point come-from-behind win. Both were impressive in different ways.

The same applies for the bottom 12. I think the Broncos and Jaguars might be a little high, but no real complaints.

One thing we definitely agree on: the pathetic Chiefs being at No. 32. Show some pride in the arrowhead on your helmet. Losing two games by a combined score of 89-10 is embarrassing to Kansas City.
