Bayern vs. Manchester City: Game Preview, Start Time, Live Stream and Schedule

Tim DanielsSep 20, 2011

Manchester City travels to Germany to take on Bayern Munich as both teams continue Champions League play in Group A. It will be the second game of six in the group stage for each team, and both are expected to advance from the group to the knockout stages.

The Citizens started the tournament with a disappointing home draw against Italian side Napoli. Aleksandar Kolarov scored the equalizer for City in the 74th minute to secure a point, but they weren't able to score the winner despite being the more dangerous team for most of the match.

Der FCB got off to a better start by going on the road to Villarreal and picking up a 2-0 win. Toni Kroos got the scoring started in the seventh minute and Rafinha added one with 14 minutes left in the contest as Bayern cruised to victory.

Getting a point out of this match would be huge for the Citizens, who now have Nov. 22 circled on their calendars for the return match against Napoli. That game could decide which team decides join Bayern in the next round. A draw against Bayern would give City the upper hand.

Keys to a Bayern Munich Win

Bayern has to defend home field so that the return trip to Manchester City is less important to them because there is a chance City will need a point to advance. Der FCB have to get off to a quick start. If they can secure three points, they will be golden.

If De Jong, Milner or both miss the game for City, Bayern will have a huge advantage in the midfield thanks to Bastian Schweinsteiger, Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller. They should be able to control the pace of the game and win the possession battle.

Mario Gomez is in fantastic form and will be the target for most of the crosses sent in by that talented midfield. Counting time with the German national team, Gomez has scored 15 goals in 13 games this season and has carried over his fine form from last campaign.

Keys to a Manchester City Win

Tying Napoli at home has put Manchester City behind the eight ball in the early going. Getting a point on the road would be huge, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Roberto Mancini go with a defensive, counterattacking approach.

Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko have been a terrific tandem at striker for City and will need to continue to lead the offense while the midfield gets healthy. The duo have combined for 14 goals in eight league games, but neither found the score sheet against Napoli.

Joe Hart will be asked to stand on his head at times, especially if De Jong misses the game. He's one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, but his decision making is still a work in process as he plays more high-profile fixtures

Prediction: Bayern Munich 2, Manchester City 1
