Nebraska Football: Cornhuskers Find a New Quarterback

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez has played well at times this year. He has proven to be a threat throwing the ball as well as with his legs. Some fans even have considered Martinez a Heisman Trophy candidate. While Martinez has played well for the majority of the season, he may have some competition next year.

Nebraska was informed on Monday that quarterback Tommy Armstrong has committed to the Cornhuskers. Armstrong is from Steele High School in San Antonio, Texas. Last season Armstrong led his team to the state championship. Winning a championship in Texas high school football is no easy task. Armstrong has his team on their way to their second title this year.

Tommy Armstrong is big quarterback at 6'2", 210 pounds. Armstrong in the No. 16 rated high school quarterback by rivals.com and one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the country.

Last week Armstrong made his official visit to Nebraska for the Washington game. Armstrong came away impressed with how passionate Cornhusker fans are with their football team. The other schools that were competing for Armstrong were TCU, Oregon and Southern Mississippi. Armstrong will make the second recruit from San Antonio in two years. Last year Nebraska was able to recruit five-star running back Aaron Green from Madison High School in San Antonio.

Will Armstrong have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback position next season? Anything is possible with head coach Bo Pelini. Last year Pelini sat senior quarterback Zack Lee on the bench in favor of freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez. Armstrong was interviewed on the Unsportsmanlike Conduct Radio Show in Omaha and said he was not promised a starting position but a chance to compete.

Recruiting a quarterback was the No. 1 priority for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska has only two scholarship quarterbacks on their roster. The addition of Armstrong gives the Cornhuskers depth at the most important position on the roster.

Nebraska is a young team this year and with the addition of Armstrong at quarterback, the future is looking bright for the Cornhuskers.
