Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Mayweather Sucker Punch Digs Deeper Hole for Boxing

Kyle VassaloJun 7, 2018

Viewers of the Mayweather vs. Ortiz fight didn't say, "Wow did you see that awesome sucker punch last night?" The fight didn't live up to the hype and Mayweather's classless knockout digs an even bigger hole for boxing.

Boxing is in a bind. Wladimir Klitschko dominating the heavyweight ranks isn't all that appealing and the anticlimactic fights we keep being fed are undoubtedly deterring would-be fans from really getting into the sport.

Mayweather vs. Ortiz had all the makings of a marquee fight. Victor Ortiz is a rising superstar in the sport and Floyd Mayweather is an undefeated icon nearing the end of his career.

Instead, a classless sucker punch left audiences feeling as though they had thrown their money away. It was fair, in the sense that it was between the bells, but Mayweather got a cheap win that hurt not only his legacy, but the sport in general.

Boxing is not a friendly sport, but there is still etiquette. If an opponent goes to touch gloves, there is an unwritten rule that you don't tee off on him. Ortiz was apologizing for a headbutt when Mayweather laid him out.

Boxing etiquette was thrown out the window in a move that turns off not only boxing purists, but casual fans as well.

Money May got his victory and looks as notorious as ever. It's great for him and the villain he tries to portray, but it's bad for the sport. Fans who splurged and forked out the Pay Per View money didn't see a return on their investment.

An undefeated record is a beautiful thing, but Mayweather is torching his chances of being remembered as one of the greatest ever.

Mayweather might feel like boxing owes him, but in fact it is the other way around. He's not carrying the sport, he's helping burying it.
