Michael Vick Injury: Philadelphia Eagles Lucky Concussion Only Minor

Tim DanielsSep 20, 2011

Michael Vick's playing style makes him prone to injuries, and every time it takes him more than one heartbeat to get back to his feet, Philadelphia Eagles fans hold their collective breath.

The concussion he suffered against the Atlanta Falcons appears minor, which is relieving news for the City of Brotherly Love.

A report from Mike Florio of NBC's Pro Football Talk says Vick was responsive after the game and even tried to get back in the Falcons game, which would have been against NFL rules.

Though it’s unknown whether Mike Vick will take the field for the Eagles in Week Three, a source with knowledge of the situation tells us that Vick tried his damnedest to return to Sunday night’s game against the Falcons after leaving with a concussion. Per the source, Vick fought (not physically, but verbally) with trainers and doctors to go back to the field.

Mike Kafka filled in admirably in Vick's absence but was unable to lead the Eagles to victory after two fourth-quarter touchdowns by Atlanta. If Vick were to miss Week 3 with lingering concussion woes, it would likely be Kafka who would get the nod.

While the Eagles are a deep enough team to survive a short-term Vick injury, they would be doomed if he were to miss an extended period of time.

Kafka's action in Monday night's game was the first of his career after being drafted in the fourth round last year. The other option, Vince Young, is dealing with a nagging hamstring injury and was erratic at best during his time with the Tennessee Titans.

Without Vick, the Eagles would likely have to become more conservative on offense. Since they have allowed nearly 150 yards per game on the ground, that would be a disaster.

Philadelphia's defense is built to maintain leads with three strong cornerbacks shutting down the passing game and a good pass rush led by Trent Cole. It is not the ideal group to be caught up in a low-scoring, grind-it-out affair.

Going into the season most Eagles fans would have probably agreed that Vick would miss some time due to injury. That's just the nature of the beast when you have the playmaker as your quarterback.

They were able to avoid major issues this time around and can only hope for the same good luck moving forward.

Otherwise, the Eagles will be in some serious trouble.
