Liverpool's Embarrassment Against Tottenham Proves They Are in Rebuilding Mode

Matt FaulconerSep 19, 2011

The defense was terrible. The offense was inefficient. The effort was lackluster.

There was nothing positive to take away from the team's 4-0 defeat against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

About the only excuse Liverpool had for this game was the fact that two of their players were sent off. However, the Reds put themselves in that position when Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel were both sent off after receiving two yellow cards.

Here is what Richard Jolly of The National had to say about what the performance means for the Liverpool season:

"

"It was the sort of chaotic conclusion that indicated a game plan in ruins. Tellingly, Tottenham were far superior when Liverpool had 11 men, let alone 10 or nine.

One match can be deceptive but, if the season began with Arsenal as the favourites for fourth place and that mantle swiftly passed to Liverpool, now Spurs may look the likeliest. And that takes Liverpool back, not to Hodgson's ill-fated spell in charge, but to Rafa Benitez's final year when Tottenham took the Champions League spot Dalglish is now charged with reclaiming."

"

Jolly is right. Liverpool and Arsenal both look more like teams in rebuilding mode rather than teams that are contending for any hardware.

Liverpool fans are riled up about the disgraceful performance and don't appear to be happy with the direction of the club right now.

It didn't look like Liverpool was on the field. It looked like more like a team from the Football League Championship.

It was disgraceful, and the Liverpool players should be ashamed of the performance. This team is in rebuilding mode, like it or not, that is the state of the club.
