Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Boxing Needs Epic Superfight to Happen Immediately

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

With no challengers left for Floyd Mayweather to tangle with after knocking out Victor Ortiz on Saturday, and Manny Pacquiao having to get by Juan Manuel Marquez, who he has beaten once already, the time has come for the biggest super fight in boxing history to take place.

Mayweather, despite his somewhat controversial victory over Ortiz, has nothing left to prove to anyone. He is 42-0 and has beaten the best boxers in five different weight classes over the 15 years. He has taken on all challengers to this point and all of them have failed to defeat him.

Pacquiao has been the consensus pound-for-pound top fighter in the world for the last six years. He has not lost since a unanimous decision loss to Erik Morales in March 2005, a span of 14 fights.

These two fighters have been dancing around each other for so long. The last four opponents that Mayweather has fought, prior to the Ortiz bout, are four men that Pacquiao has fought and defeated (Shane Mosley, Marquez, Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya).

They have dominated the sport so much that they have no one left to challenge except for fighters that the other one has already beaten. That should be the biggest sign of all that it is time for this fight to happen.

If it is not a sign, the fact that these two men would make at least $100 million by agreeing to do the fight should have them itching to sign the contract.

Boxing has become an irrelevant sport in this country, unless Mayweather or Pacquiao is fighting. Those two have become bigger than the sport itself, and the only way to bring a mainstream audience back to the sport is by having these two men fight.

How many more times are fans going to pay premium prices to watch these two fighters beat the same guys that they have been beating for the last six years?

There is no fight that either fighter can take that will mean anything unless it is against each other. Both fighters realize it, and the minor details that prevented the fight from happening in 2010 have to be worked out if/when the two sides get back to the negotiating table.

It doesn't matter what the two sides have to do to make the fight happen, all that matters is that they make the fight happen.
