Seahawks vs. Steelers Week 2: Is It Time to Put in Charlie Whitehurst?
The Seahawks offense has been pitiful in their first two games of the young season.
Starting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has completed 41-of-66 passes for 356 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Add to that, Jackson has fumbled the ball twice and hasn't been able to move the football successfully all season.
The question must be asked, is it time to put in Charlie Whitehurst?
The Offense Is Terrible
1 of 3The Seahawks were projected to have one of the worst offenses in the entire NFL, and they have lived up to all of the poor expectations. Through two games, the Seahawks have averaged 144 yards passing (28th in the NFL) and 47.5 yards rushing (32nd in the NFL).
After only putting up 17 points against the 49ers in Week 1, the Seahawks were shut out the following week against the Steelers. The offense has played terrible, most of the blame can be put on the offensive line’s struggles, which has had absolutely no consistency.
I’m not saying that Whitehurst is going to be significantly better, but I don’t think that he will be worse.
Whitehurst Deserves His Chance
2 of 3Jackson was given the starting job by Pete Carroll when he was brought in, and it was his job to lose. With that said, I firmly believe that Whitehurst outperformed Jackson in the preseason and was wrongfully not given the job.
Whitehurst is in his second season in the organization and was supposed to be Hasselbeck’s replacement. Give Whitehurst a chance and go back to Jackson if it doesn’t work.
What’s There to Lose?
3 of 3When you’re the worst offense in the entire league, you can’t go any farther down.
A lot of the offense’s failure isn’t Jackson’s fault, but because the quarterback position is such a focal point of the offense the first to get axed is the QB or coach.
My suggestion would be to keep Jackson in for another week, and if the offense continues to struggle, make the switch. Give Whitehurst a few games to prove his merit, and then decide on a quarterback from there.
