Michael Vick Injury: 5 Waiver Wire Replacements for Eagles Superstar

Wes ODonnellSep 19, 2011

It was only a matter of time before Michael Vick went down with an injury.

Don't get me wrong, I do not wish any negativity or ill will towards the Eagles' superstar quarterback, but his style of play and body type behind behind that offensive line are simply a recipe for disaster at one point or another.

For the most part it appears he is okay.

The reports indicate his concussion was "slight", but he'll still undergo all the NFL's new, strict, concussion policy.

There is a chance he is cleared to play for Week 3 against the Giants, but there is an equal chance he doesn't suit up at all.

Here are five waiver wire pickups you can look into if you need an emergency replacement for Vick on your fantasy football squad.

LIFE HURTS. THIS INJURY UPDATE BROUGHT TO YOU BY DICKIES.

Mike Kafka/Vince Young, Eagles

1 of 5

The obvious no-brainer pick is Vick's own backup, Mike Kafka or Vince Young.

Young would obviously be the more viable option if healthy, but he was inactive yesterday and it is unclear if he will be ready to go next week against the Giants.

Nevertheless, third-string, second-year quarterback Kafka, in relief, didn't look bad in his NFL debut last night last night as he completed seven of nine passes, with one incompletion coming under two minutes in Atlanta's territory that Jeremy Maclin should've caught and the other being a hail-mary attempt as the Eagles lost 35-31 on Sunday night.

The Eagles play a banged up Giants secondary next week, so the best bet for Vick owners is to get Kafka as a precautionary measure for Vick missing the game.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bills

2 of 5

Fitzpatrick's availability will be a long shot in deeper leagues, but he is still available 36 percent of Yahoo leagues.

The Bills' quarterback has looked stellar this season—albeit against mediocre defenses—and has his team actually winning football games.

He won't throw for a million yards like the next guy on this list, but his big brain (Harvard player) has helped him toss seven touchdowns to only one interception in this first two games this season.

Things will get more difficult for him as the year goes on, but his next two games—New England and Cincinnati—are favorable matchups for quarterbacks right now.

Cam Newton, Panthers

3 of 5

Cam "I Can Throw For Miles" Newton has yet to win an NFL game, but he's racking up fantasy yardage bonuses at a regular clip.

The Panthers don't have a ton of talent around him to make things work, but he's still spinning numbers.

Yahoo has him available in 22 percent of their leagues still and he'll be 100 percent owned by the week's end.

If Newton isn't on someone's roster yet then it needs to be your roster.

Tarvaris Jackson, Seahawks

4 of 5

Tarvaris Jackson certainly hasn't been good, but he also hasn't been awful either.

The new Seattle signal caller doesn't have a healthy receiving unit around him and the offensive line is trouble at best.

This week, however, the Seahawks finally return home and host division rivals, Arizona.

The Cardinals' defense is giving up nearly 470 yards of total offense per game, including 343 yards in the air.

For at least a week, Tarvaris Jackson might have a chance of putting up points.

Andy Dalton, Bengals

5 of 5

Andy Dalton put together a solid Week 2 performance on the road in Denver. It didn't go as planned—the Bengals lost—but it was good to see the rookie put things together.

Next week Dalton and the Bengals will host the San Francisco 49ers. A trip to the East Coast is always an issue for West Coast teams, and the 49ers are no different.

Dalton won't have many opportunities to shine this season, but this week may be one of them.

If he can get on the same page with A.J. Green they could be very good together.
