Cam Newton: Could Carolina Panthers Rookie QB Just Be That Good?

Tim McTiernanSep 19, 2011

As many will know, Cam Newton threw for 400 yards once again.

However, people have seemed quick to write it off as an anomaly.

But what if Newton really is that good?

Week 1, Newton and the Panthers faced off against the Arizona Cardinals.

Last season, the Cardinals defense was ranked No. 11 in interceptions, with 17; No. 18 in sacks, with 33; and No. 29 in average yards allowed per game, with 373.

When Newton shredded them with 422 yards Week 1, it was shocking for a rookie, but easy to write off because the Arizona defense isn't that good.

In Week2, the Panthers went up against the defending Super Bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers, who pride themselves on defense.

Last season, the Packers were No. 5, with 309 yards allowed per game; No. 2, with 24 interceptions; and No. 2 with 47 sacks last season.

So they were averaging 1.5 interceptions per game, and about three sacks per game.

On Sunday, they got three interceptions and four sacks, so they did exactly what they were capable of.

The one area where they fell apart was the yards allowed.

Newton was once again able to throw for more than 400 yards—432 to be exact—and he broke some more records in the process.

But the problem is, people are now saying that the Green Bay Packers defense was, and is, overrated.

The statistics are right there, the Green Bay Packers have a top tier defense. So saying they're overrated is simply not true.

The Panthers may have lost two in a row, but if you take away some of the rookie mistakes for Newton, such as the bad interceptions, and attempting to run past Clay Matthews, it could easily have been 2-0.

Could it be that Cam Newton really is that good? Is it too early to anoint him as the savior of football in Carolina?

After the game on Sunday, Aaron Rodgers said, "I'm glad we played them early in the season, because when he figures it out fully, he's gonna be hard to stop."

If Aaron Rodgers sees something there, then you can be pretty sure that this is no anomaly. This is no fluke.

Newton really is that good, and the Panthers fans can hope again.
