Tottenham v. Liverpool: Reds Take a Step Back in Ugly Loss

Richard LangfordSep 18, 2011

The Liverpool Reds entered this game with a wave of momentum and looking to prove they had closed the gap on Tottenham. It didn't happen. And it didn't happen to such a degree that Liverpool's promising start to their season has taken a step back.

That's what happens when you lose 4-0.

That is two goals worse than the outcome suffered by Tottenham the last time these two teams met. The Spurs took down the Reds 2-0 when these teams last met in May.

Since then Kenny Daglish had transformed this club. They were coming off of a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Stoke City, but had won their previous three matches by a combined score of 8-2. That included an impressive 2-0 win over Arsenal.

That led to Liverpool riding into this match with big hopes and expectations. Because as well as they had been playing, Tottenham had been equally bad. They had won just one match out of their last four.

A stretch that included a disappointing 0-0 draw to Hearts and a 5-1 shellacking to Manchester City.

Luka Modric got things started off quickly for the Spurs. He found the net just seven minutes into the match. And that is where the match stood as the Spurs took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half was a different story. Jermain Defoe added a goal in the 66th minute. This goal seemed to beat the life out of the Reds, and they did not recover.

Just two minutes later Emmanuel Adebayor added the third goal. He then tacked on the fourth and final goal in stoppage time.

And all of that led to a 4-0 win for the Spurs, and sends Liverpool back to the drawing board.
