Braylon Edwards Injury: 49ers Excel Despite Banged Up Receiving Corps

Kyle VassaloSep 18, 2011

Braylon Edwards left the Week 2 game against the Cowboys with a right knee injury, but the 49ers are having no problem moving the ball through the air.

Michael Crabtree continues to be plagued by a foot injury, but even with a banged up No. 1 and No. 2 receiver, guys are stepping up and taking control of this game.

Oddly enough, it's no Vernon Davis who has helped to fill the void. Kyle Williams came up with a huge touchdown catch on a fade route that put the 49ers up 14-0.

The 49ers have been sorely lacking a true No. 1 receiver since Terrell Owens left the team in 2002. That was also the last year the 49ers had a 1,000 yard receiver. Even so, it's encouraging to see guys step up in a game of this magnitude.

The passing game didn't look confident last week against the Seahawks, which made it unclear as to how they would perform this week against Dallas. With Crabtree's foot injury and now Edwards falling to injury, the 49ers face an uphill battle, but are handling it considerably well.

Alex Smith seems unphased by his targets being battered. The offense is in sync and moving the ball at will on the Cowboys.

That's a great sign for the 49ers, who have looked less than impressive thus far in Jim Harbaugh's new offense. They look comfortable in the passing game and once they are able to put their best 11 on the field, the 49ers could finally have a passing game teams have to respect.

Frank Gore has had to take on stacked fronts over the years. Getting it going through the air as they are brings a guy out of the box opens up the entire offense.

Should Edwards return, the Cowboys are going to face an even bigger uphill battle. For the time being, the 49ers are doing the best with what they have. According to the Washington Post, Edwards' return is questionable at this point.
