Knowshon Moreno Injury: Which Broncos Backs Get Carries with RB Inactive?

Ryan PhillipsSep 18, 2011

Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno is inactive for today's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Willis McGahee will get the start in his place.

McGahee is likely to see a full load of carries today with Moreno out. Last week in Denver's 23-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders, the Miami product carried the ball four times for just three yards, and added five receptions for 32 yards. Expect him to do better this week.

Late in the first quarter against the Bengals, McGahee has eight carries for 32 yards and a touchdown, so it's looking like he'll be a solid fill-in for Moreno.

Lance Ball is also likely to see a fair amount of short-yardage carries. Thus far today he has two rushes for eight yards.

What the Broncos should do without Moreno is use Tim Tebow in a few wildcat sets, but I'm fairly certain John Fox won't do that. That just doesn't seem to be his style.

Fox seems content to let McGahee run the ball and make himself available as a receiving option out of the backfield. He is certainly versatile enough to be that guy for the offense while Moreno is on the shelf, but the combination of McGahee and Ball shouldn't get any Broncos fans excited.

Moreno's hamstring could keep him out a few weeks, so the way Denver's running game looks today will likely have a pretty serious influence on game plans moving forward.
