Viking's Frerotte Showing His Age.

Ben SchiermanNov 24, 2008

Vikings quarterback Gus Frerotte has begun to show signs of wear and tear over the past few weeks.

Frerotte, 37, won the starting job in week 3 of the 2008 season and started off hot.  His best performance came against the Houston Texans, where he threw for three touchdowns with just one pick.

However, after a slew of interceptions in games against Chicago and Green Bay, Frerotte's mediocrity has increased with each passing week.

It has become more and more evident that this Vikings team has but one glaring weakness, and it is Frerotte.  In this week's game against Jacksonville, Frerotte looked like a first year man on the field, making several rookie mistakes.

After being flushed from the pocket several times, Frerotte continually took the sack as opposed to simply throwing the ball away, including one interception.  As a result of taking several shots, he began to feel his age, needing to be helped off the field after one play.

At this point, one thing has become exceedingly clear.  The Vikings need a quarterback.  Whether this come through a free agency pick up, or through the draft, this team's need for someone to manage the game efficiently is priority number one at this point.

A team with so much talent on either side of the ball cannot afford to keep losing games due to poor quarterbacking and game management.  This is something that needs to be remedied, and soon if this team is to capitalize on its talent and finally make the playoffs.

Frerotte was and still is a quick fix, a band-aid that is beginning to peel off.  Like every Viking's quarterback since the salad days of Daunte Culpepper's MVP season, Frerotte will fade into obscurity after this season.

The real question is, who will be next? And furthermore, will they get the job done and lead this talented team into the post season?  Only time will tell.
