Sidney Rice Injury: Why Fantasy Football Owners Should Dump WR Now

Jon DoveSep 18, 2011

According to Jay Glazer, Sidney Rice has a torn labrum, but will try and play through the injury.  For one magical season, Rice was a top receiver in both the league and fantasy football.  During that season, Rice was highly productive, compiling 83 receptions, 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns.  However, he has since struggled to make much of an impact.

During the offseason, Rice signed a big contract to join the Seattle Seahawks.  Rice has yet to suit up for the Seahawks, and now when he does he will be dealing with a debilitating injury.  He may be able to play through the torn labrum, but will be less effective.

Fantasy football owners are getting more and more frustrated by Rice's string of injuries.  He has so much potential that owners are willing to remain optimistic, even selecting him earlier than projected.  However, too often Rice has disappointed.  It is time to stop counting on Rice and move on.

He is still worth a roster spot, but isn't someone that you can rely on. If you're in a league with limited bench spots feel free to drop Rice.  Even if he returns, he will likely struggle to be effective.  Rice utilizes his size and strength to box out defenders and make plays on the ball.  Any injury will impact Rice's ability to be physical.

Prior to the injury, Rice's value was on the decline.  The presence of Tarvaris Jackson limited Rice's potential. In the preseason, Jackson showed little to make anyone feel confident about his ability to effectively distribute the football.  The combination of Jackson's play and Rice's injury really makes for tough a situation.

If you were relying on Sidney Rice to produce, you should start searching for another option.
